Stormy Monday morning

Hello Friends,

Wind was straight east outside the RealSurf wheelhouse as your correspondent climbed aloft for a look at the situation around 0730. Skies were dark and the ocean was a similar shade. Easy to believe there’s a 90% chance of rain. Wind was ESE at around 15 kts and the forecast tells us it’ll ramp up into the 15-25 kt range by lunch time.

As the picture shows, conditions were pretty rugged at Dee Why point. Even so, there were a few people in the water chasing the waist to chest plus sets. The MHL buoy was picking up a mix of 2.4 metres of 8-second SE wind swell and 7-10 sec smaller stuff from the NE.

Tide was high at 0440 and will be low again at 1100.

According to this morning’s swell models, the energy levels are likely to peak across the next 24 hours before very gradually fading over the remainder of the week. However, along with lots of rain (not good for the water quality), it looks as though the onshores will stay in place through to early Thursday before we see a brief SW episode.

More swell energy this morning but the wind’s smashing it.

Weather Situation
A high pressure system south of the Bight is moving slowly east maintaining a weak ridge over the coast and directing mostly southeasterly winds onshore. Winds are expected to increase slightly today as the high becomes anchored south of Tasmania until at least the middle of the next week. A deepening trough over eastern New South Wales is expected to move slowly east to be offshore by Wednesday morning with winds turning southerly and freshening in its wake.
