Hot Hot Hot, In Byron Bay Today.
Posted on February 7th, 2012 in Byron.Well maybe it wasn’t quite that hot, yet compared to the weather of the last few months it was like strolling around in a sauna, in Byron Bay today. Hot and humid though it was, there were waves. The water was as clear as it gets, the swell still had a little lingering size, and occasionally some even shaped up clean enough for a reasonable slide. There were a few blueys so watch out for them if you’re allergic or just averse to getting stung. Also we watched something large chase several school of fish through the lineup repeatedly, not sure what it was, as I wasn’t in the water at the time or high enough to get a clean shot of it. But suffice to say whatever it was it was large enough to have the fish freaked, In Byron Bay Today.
Finite Space, In Byron Bay Today.
Posted on February 6th, 2012 in Byron.Well we really couldn’t ask for better weather for a Sunday than what was dished up, in Byron Bay today. We even had swell and offshore winds to boot. There were people all over the place; car parks were going at a premium rate, and some were thinking it may be time to lock the gate. The place really can’t handle any more people than this. Today the bay was at saturation point. That moment when it’s only just manageable, any more people, and folks start getting cranky and losing their tempers. Then it’s no fun for anyone. Pity the powers that be, just can’t seem to see, that geographically speaking Byron Bay is a finite space. We can’t just keep piling people in on top of each other at this current rate. Luckily today, we reached the limit without spilling over the top. It was hard to get a park, but thankfully you could still find one with patience. The traffic was heavy, but not quite gridlocked, in today’s terms; it means all is well for a sunny Sunday with swell, In Byron Bay Today.
What It Is, In Byron Bay Today’s Weekend Review.
Posted on February 5th, 2012 in Byron. What’s this, sunshine, and for more than one day? Huey must have gone mad and forgotten to hit the rain switch, in Byron Bay today. Ok maybe its best not to rag Huey and temp fate, the sun’s been out a few times this week and we reckon it’s great. As for the waves, well I know I’m starting to sound like scratched record. But it’s still not so good now. For those who know how willing we are to surf not good stuff around here, well that’s quite a statement. Simple fact is that every few years or so the sand gets trashed before it gets well settled. Once this happens the cycle can go on for weeks or even months. No point railing against it though, it is what it is. We either are grateful for what we’ve got or go mad with pointless resentment over the state of the banks, In Byron Bay Today.
Take A Peak, In Byron Bay Today.
Posted on February 4th, 2012 in Byron. While the banks in town still leave much to be desired there were a few reasonable peaks for those who knew where to look, in Byron Bay today. The swell jacked a little, but the wind didn’t really cooperate and blew straight onshore although reasonably light all day. This of course brought in a few blueys which kept the crowds down. But still there were waves to be found, you just had to look a little harder and you could take your peak, In Byron Bay Today.
Sneaky Southerly, In Byron Bay Today.
Posted on February 2nd, 2012 in Byron. So there you have it, a sneaky southerly swept through town this morning catching pretty much everyone by surprise, in Byron Bay today. Ok some of us suspected it could happen. But the weather has been so erratic of late it would have been a brave call to say it was definitely on the way. Yet it did do what a southerly does, and cleaned up the dark water and even made the lame-o banks we have right now look almost downright inviting. In fact at times it even got kind of pretty. But those who surfed it, myself included, soon realised there is much repair work for Huey to do on our sand, mores’ the pity. Be that as it may, the sun shone for most of the day, well that is until it rained, and most enjoyed the sneaky southerly, In Byron Bay Today.
A Little Respect, In Byron Bay Today.
Posted on February 1st, 2012 in Big Picture, Byron, Comment, Opinion. Now it was a rather glorious morning to say the least, sun was out, lines were reasonably clean and the crew were feeling well happy and mellow, in Byron Bay today. Then many sponsored pro Groms arrived in the bay. Now we got nothing Pro Groms, we got our fair share that live here and they are fine. But these guys were kind of different. Don’t know where they were from, or what their program was. But they brought a tonne of attitude and zero respect for anyone else in the water in the bay. So as much as I’d prefer not to, this must be said. Not cool behaviour guys, really not cool at all. Sure these kids were good, but hey we got local crew surf just as well or better, and they sure don’t behave like you guys did. Turning up at someone else’s home en masse and then proceeding to repeatedly burn and snake everyone else in the lineup is just plain lame. It’s not particularly good press for your sponsors either. So try to work with the crew when you visit next time, not against them. A little respect to the locals in the water goes a long way to making it all good for all concerned, In Byron Bay Today.
Last Call, In Byron Bay Today.
Posted on January 31st, 2012 in Byron. It was the last call on lunchtime waves for the Groms, in Byron Bay today. After all the rubbish dished up last week it seems only fair that Huey was feeling just a tad more generous today. Officially the holidays are over, but today it was a school free day, and finally although windy and cold in the water, there were waves. So just before getting back to school the crew had a last chance to pull into a few. Sure it could have been better, but compared to what’s been on lately, nobody was complaining and at least it wasn’t raining. So for those who managed to get their orders in on the last call, it’s about time you guys finally scored, In Byron Bay Today.
Whimper, In Byron Bay Today.
Posted on January 30th, 2012 in Byron. The school holidays for the local kids officially came to end with, in Byron Bay today. We were hoping that Huey might finally turn on the goods for the local Groms but it was not to be. The bottom line is that the sand took a hammering this summer and it’s still really unstable and shifting all over the place. Unfortunately this pattern could very possibly continue for some time yet. It’s just the way it is when we get big holes in the banks. It can go either way. It could fill in and build great sand, or it could create a venturi effect and suck it all away. The monsoonal troughs we’ve been experiencing have been producing plenty of wind and rain over the past few weeks, and some junky tricky lumpy short period wind swell as well. But wind swell is not what we need right now, it just keeps the sand unstable. So there we have it, grey windy rainy and really average waves, yes the summer holidays did indeed end with a whimper and not bang, In Byron Bay Today.
One Wet week, In Byron Bay Today.
Posted on January 29th, 2012 in Byron. You know it’s wet with pretty bad waves when we pull the plug and don’t shoot, in Byron Bay today. We have always made the effort to try and squeeze a daily update out of what was on offer. But come last Wednesday this week, we had to admit defeat, and just not bother. Bottom line, it’s rare that we can’t find something worth surfing and someone willing to surf it. But this week just past was shocker, bad weather, lame surf, not so good sand; flash flooding all around the shire. Yeah it all adds up to not much fun for anyone. Here’s hoping Huey lightens up a little real soon, and gives us all a little sun and some room to move. Folks we spoke to this week are starting get mighty tired of the all this rain as it’s just been one wet week, In Byron Bay Today.
That Summer Feeling, In Byron Bay Today.
Posted on January 26th, 2012 in Byron. Now normally we’d get out and shoot even in this weather. But every now and again on a very rare occasion we get a day that quite simply is not worth the effort. It takes a special kind of bad day, wrong sand, wrong tides, constantly shifting squally winds and constant rain with really messy short period swell, precisely the recipe dished up in the bay today. So we decided we’d tweak some summer memories for you instead, here’s a little peak at how it was in January this time last year, In Byron Bay Today.
