oot & a-boot lookin’ for waves
Posted on February 24th, 2010 in At large, Curl Curl, Dee Why.Hello Friends,
Gonna pop up a few piccies later, but since I’m working off my netbook from the lovely surrounds of the sth Curly carpark, thought I’d give you the skinny first.
As anticipated last night, the swell has definitely pushed right up. It’s pretty raw and at first light this morning there wasn’t much in the way of quality when I checked Dee Why. Mate Barry and I were equipped to go, but in the end the grey skies, and crumbly sectiony junk just couldn’t deflect us from a coffee. There were one or two in the water, but it was a struggle to even get a takeoff. About every ten minutes there was a bigger set and by the time we left the coffee joint, they were arriving reasonably often. Sadly I can’t tell you that the peak had improved.
Watching Curly right now and there are half a dozen in waiting for something vaguely catchable. Not a classic by any stretch of the imagination. Longest ride I’ve seen was maybe 4 seconds. Keeness required.

Very, very small

Hello Friends,
Well, it’s awful tiny this morning around the northern beaches. I was up for an early and ended up going for coffee instead. Need a few more waveless days before I’m ready to go out in anything I guess.
First spot on the checkout list was Dee Why at daybreak. Watched it with mate Barry for quite awhile before we decided the sub-waist high dribble just wasn’t going to tempt us. After a restorative coffee, I headed over the hill to see if there was something to surf at Curly.
Again, no dice. There were a couple bods up the north end, but the waits were exceedingly long and when they came, the sets were barely waist high – and then only for a second or two before they subsided into a bit of froth.
Took a flyer and headed north for a squizz at the Gardens-Narra stretch. There were a few folks in at Northy (always are) but as with elsewhere, the waits were very long and the payoffs very ordinary. You know when there are only half a dozen in there that it’s pretty dire. There were a couple similarly flabby, but slightly smaller peaks way down the beach too. If I still had my air mat, I mighta gone one of ‘em.
Surf outlook for today is basically more of the same. About the best I think we can hope for is maybe a small uptick for the late at those spots out of the expected NE’ly.
Tomorrow morning is pretty doubtful looking for the early. The current forecast is calling for a south change before lunch and with it an increase in the energy levels as the dominant swell direction swings to the south. With luck Weds will see decreasing S-SE’ly wind and continuing swell. Right now, midday Wednesday at south swell spots appears to be the pick of the week. The models currently project the south energy hanging around through Thursday before we’re back to quite small in Sydney – just in time for the weekend.
Go well with your day!

Blown out mess today
Posted on February 18th, 2010 in Curl Curl, Surf Reports.3 feet of SE wind blown mess. Size has dropped signifcantly and the wind is up from the S/ SE. Even Manly looked a bit rough this morning although probably the best option for a wave. Tomorrow, the wind is out of the east but the swell and period is forecats to increase and Saturday looks good at this stage. Enjoy.
Had a look at 4 beaches and DY looked the goods
Posted on February 17th, 2010 in Curl Curl, Surf Reports.Curly- 3-4 feet, off/ cross shore and uncrowded. South Curly the pick. Manly 2 feet with the occasional bigger one, crowded and offshore. Freshie- straight, 2-3 feet and bumpy. Just a few punters out. DY- 3 feet, clean and fair crowd in attendance but the pick of the morning. Tide is low and worth a paddle despite the pollution. Not as big as predicted at any beaches but Curly definitely the biggest. Enjoy.
3 feet from the east tending south later with westerly winds
Posted on February 15th, 2010 in Curl Curl, Surf Reports.Home from Colorado now and back into some swell. Nice easterly swell today turning SE later today with westerly winds and building significantly in size into tomorrow and wednesday. Conditions were glassy this morning. A bit straight at Curly so I headed to Queensie where it was glassy, 3 feet and relatively uncrowded for some nice waves for the early. Swell all week. Enjoy.
Out & about Mona-Northy-DY-Curly
Posted on February 14th, 2010 in At large, Curl Curl, Dee Why, North Narrabeen.Hello Friends,
Went out for a look at the beach situation mid-morning. Started at Warriewood-Mona Vale and can tell you it looked like a pretty good morning to fly your powered hangglider lazily along the beaches. There were little waves in the knee to waist high range showing here and there along the stretch Mona Vale to Warriewood. It was/is a case of pick your peak, lower expectations to the minimum and wait.
There’s a contest going on at Northy, so the biggest and most interesting looking peak I saw this morning is off limits for the likes of you and I. Again though, there were occasional little peaks dotted along the beach immediately south of there, so it wasn’t as though you couldn’t find a little something (see below).

Went through Dee Why on the way to see what was what at Curly. It was pretty small along the stretch. But again, there were a few little peaks being carefully attended by the super keen. Waist high woulda been a bomb.
Over the hill at Curly it was curiously unoccupied in the middle stretch, with small crowds at either end. I reckon at a lower tide (around 4pm) there should be a few peaks showing. Of course, as with elsewhere, it was very minor.
Go well with your day!

Coulda, shoulda, woulda

Sorry, I’m late because I went down for a surf at 0630 and have only just got back. Don’t get excited though. It was so inconsistent, weak and gutlessly tiny at Dee Why that we ended up going for coffees instead. The picture I got afterwards was easily the best wave I saw. Maybe as the tide drops it’ll smarten up and the spots that don’t mind a touch of NE wind will start to come good.
After coffee, I headed over the hill to see if Curly was any better. As the picture shows, the answer was firmly in the negative.
Not prepared to give up, I looped up for an inspection of the situation along the Collaroy-Narrabeen stretch. Northy was busy as usual because at least it sort of had a little peak in the high tide conditions. But it was very slow and inconsistent. Maybe a fat fishy would be the go.
Finally I stopped for a look at Gardens. Fair number in, but as with everywhere else, the watchword was gutless. Good for paddling practice and working on your low speed game I guess. Water looked inviting too… but by then I’d squandered my time allowance. Dontcha hate that?
Outlook for the next few days is not too brilliant. From the latest run of the models it would seem that tomorrow is likely to be a touch smaller than today and that Friday through Sunday will be really tiny to flat most places.
There is some reason to be hopeful about early to mid next week according to the models. It seems that we might get another dose of s-sse swell from maybe late Monday-early Tuesday. Way too early to lock it in as a done deal, but might be worth bumping your appointments away from that part of the week… if ya know what I mean!
Have yourself a fantastic day!

A couple more pics (Manly & Curly)
Posted on January 25th, 2010 in Curl Curl, Manly.Hello Friends,
Swell is on the fade and there were lots of folks in the water at Manly and Curly bidding it adieu.
I think the pictures pretty much tell the story – they’re both set waves.

New swell on it’s way
Posted on January 18th, 2010 in Curl Curl, Surf Reports. It’s easy skiing in Colorado when the swell’s no good but the next few days in Sydney and surrounds could be a stark turn around from the trash we’ve had in the past few months. Longer period swell on the charts combined with offshore winds should cause you to chuck a sickie and hit the swell with the every other frothing desperate that lives near the beach. Hope it goes off at your local. Wish i was there. Enjoy.

Posted on January 18th, 2010 in At large, Curl Curl, Freshwater, Manly.Hello Friends,
Had to drop my old tractor, er, car, in at mechanic’s for rego, so found myself fetched up in lovely Brookvale. Happily mate PB was free to give me a ride home, so we took the long way and checked the beach.
There were a few bods in the water up toward the Queenscliff end of Manly. Seemed to be a bit of a wait for waves, but every now and then a little mal-able option rolled gently in from the sparkling horizon.

Over at Freshy there were similar numbers in the water and the waves were about the same size if not a touch bigger on the sets. The only problem is that there are just no banks there at the moment, so every single one of them was shutting down, including the set wave in the picture below…

Last spot we checked out was Curly. It was around the same size as Manly and showing the same weakness. Looked like you could maybe get a fish up to speed for a few moments as the wave stood up, but that’s about it. Again, water looked inviting and the wind wasn’t into it. There are worse ways to kick off a week…

Finally, I just had a call from Brian up in Ooffs who reports that at long last they have a little something to play on. Wave faces are into the three foot range on what looks to him to be a mainly east swell.
