Flat… whats new.
Posted on September 2nd, 2010 in Curl Curl, Manly. Not much to report this morning at Queenscliff or South Curly. Low cloud cover and very small surf. 1 foot. Low tide 7.21am. Wind very light and variable but from the southern quarters. According to the BOM rain hanging around the south down near Wollongong (7.30am). Enjoy your day with a surfing mag or book.
Curly has size but shutdowns aplenty
Posted on August 8th, 2010 in Curl Curl.Stopped by Curly after the soccer. Lots of size, and lots of folks. But after watching for awhile, it became apparent that the swell is not working with the current banks at all well. Very high percentage of one-turn-wonder waves and general shutdowness.
Here’s a snap of a briefly nice looking set wave at the north end…

PICS: Curly Sunday, late morning

Our little SE swell was on the fade and the wind was going around to the south when I rocked up around 1100 with the Canon 5D MkII and 100-400mm. There were plenty of folks in the water despite the fairly ordinary conditions. If you were in the water in the middle part of the beach, have a look through, I might have caught your immortal moves!

Sunny winter morning in Sydney with light offshores. I had a spare half hour, so I set up the camera and 650mm just south of mid-Curly and grabbed a few shots. As always my goal was to capture regular surfers at their best moments. Tide was a bit full, but every now and then a section stood up and looked the goods.
As always, you can buy an unwatermarked copy of any image in the gallery (prices start at less than 10 bucks) simply by clicking the one you want and looking for the “add to cart” link.

When the lighting is as good as it was this afternoon, a photographer finds it very hard to resist getting out and about with a camera. Yours truly went first to Manly on the off chance the touch of east in the swell was letting it get into the north end of the famous stretch. And sure enough, there were clean little offshore sets for the moderate size crew at the Queenscliff end. I shot for about half an hour, so if you happen to have been in the water there between about 1:30 and 2:00 pm, check back on Saturday for the gallery of shots I came back with.

Next stop on my afternoon shooting expedition was Freshy. As usual the numbers weren’t on the same scale as Manly, but there was a healthy crew enjoying the unnaturally warm water and sunny offshore afternoon. Sets were a touch bigger too. Quality was similar to Manly as well. I shot from about 2:25 to 2:45 pm before deciding to head around the corner to see what was happening at Curly.

There was a sizable crew on the chest to head high plus offshore waves at south Curly. Looked like people were having fun, despite the somewhat variable quality of the peaks. It looks as though there’s some deep water between the outside peaks and the beach because many waves started out looking good before they kind of fatted out on the inside. I set up just to the north of the main peak and took pictures from about 3:00 to 3:30 pm.

PICS: Curly 25 May 2010, Tue morning
Posted on May 25th, 2010 in Click! Pics for folk, Curl Curl, Top stories.Stopped by Curly this morning not really expecting to find much. Surprisingly interesting looking before the high tide and wind became issues. I only had a short time to take pictures, but I managed to get about 60 of at least ten different people. As usual all pics are available without the watermark for a very reasonable fee. Just double click on the one you want and find the add to cart link. It should all be pretty obvious!

Something at Curly… but…
Posted on April 16th, 2010 in Curl Curl.Had one of those “Dad can you drive me to… ” moments that I subsequently enlarged to a surf check. Stopped by Curly to see what the little swell was doing. It was bigger than Dee Why, but the quality was strictly so-so. A bit junky with a light sideshore, but that would be okay if there was also a little more energy. Waves were occasionally into the chest high plus range for the reasonable size crowd, but they were just sort of flabby and gutless looking. Which kinda makes sense given the average period was around the 8-9 second mark.
The good news is that the latest run of data from the MHL buoys shows the period ramping up pretty steeply in the last three hours… so maybe by this afternoon it’ll start to turn into something more interesting…

Curly
Posted on April 12th, 2010 in Curl Curl.Went for a splash at Curly this morning. Long wait between the sets it has to be said. And the wind was steady enough to push you off the peak if you weren’t paying attention. Biggest waves were getting into the shoulder high range, but for the most part it was smaller than that. The breeze was kinda chilly, although the water was still warm.
Beautiful morning to be in amongst it and quite amazingly, the crowd was comparatively light. After dropping quite a bit overnight, the MHL trace shows the swell has inched up to 1.5 metres on average at about 9 seconds apart. It’s pretty much dead south though, so I think it’ll be missing a fair number of places.
Hope you’re having a fine day!

120 Pics: Sat morning at Curly
Posted on April 10th, 2010 in Click! Pics for folk, Curl Curl, Don's surfin' pics, Top stories.Curl Curl was a popular spot on Saturday morning the 10th of April. I got over 120 shots of dozens of different surfers, so check it out if you were there – maybe I got you too! As always my goal was to take shots that make regular folks look good.
And, if you don’t see any of yourself in my lot, be sure to check out wozthatyou’s piccies. It seems we both liked the look of Curly today (although I didn’t see him while I was working the length of the beach).

Curly This Morning – 10/04/10
Posted on April 10th, 2010 in Curl Curl, Surf Reports.Good to finally get out and snap a few after a long absence. Can’t believe I haven’t posted anything in over a month! Anyway we’re into autumn now which usually means more swell and with it more the potential for more shots.
Nice morning for it at Curly. There were the odd bomb sets making their way in but for the most part the juice was already squeezed out of the swell prior to arrival so it was basically sizeable but soft with closeouts a common experience on most of the bigger sets. However, this didn’t dampen anyone’s spirits as there were quite a few out enjoying the conditions.
Hope you were one of them.
Cheers,
Doug

Weekend warriors weren’t put off by the somewhat junky conditions mid-morning at No Mans and Long Reef on Sunday 29 August. Sets were into the shoulder high range and there were...
Saturday morning saw a couple metres of south swell with a period of about 10 seconds lighting up beaches around Sydney. South Narrabeen was looking tasty early with offshore conditions...
What a great weekend! So what if Huey didn’t deliver as expected – the sun shone, the wind blew offshore and there were waves! I burnt a bit of petrol cruising round...
