shark attack Mona Vale?

11/2/2010, 1700:
ABC news reporting that witness may have exaggerated shark bite story and that experts say it was not a great white, but a wobbegong (based on the characteristics of the wound).

Guess some of our comments authors called it right!

In the interests of history, see below how we covered it.

0940 UPDATE:
Have just done short interview with Matt which I will convert to an mp3 to share soon.
Matt said that Paul was attacked in the basin while pushing his son into the tiny waves on a foamy. The shark pulled him back and he had to struggle to haul himself free and get his lad to safety before climbing out.

He was able to walk back to the car under his own steam.

But here’s the kicker. There was a Discovery channel crew down there that morning filming a segment on – you guessed it – sharks!

They had a shark expert more or less talking to camera while in the background Paul is fighting with a shark. I daresay it’ll be on youtube by this afternoon!

The shark expert guy apparently said it was a 4-5 foot long great white (obviously a pretty young one!).

More pics in a sec and the whole interview as soon as I can get it organised.
earlier I wrote…

Big news from alumni reporter Matt J who reports a person has been injured by a shark at Mona Vale. Matt says the person is okay. He’s sent some pics which I will post as soon as I can get them off my phone.

Afternoon update

Posted on February 3rd, 2010 in At large, Dee Why, Mona Vale, North Narrabeen.

Hello Friends,

Went out for a look around this afternoon, but didn’t see anything to tempt me into the water. However, I got a few pictures to share.

First stop was Mona Vale where I thought I might see if anything was happening at the basin. My hunch was right and there were a few bodyboarders risking life and limb taking off in the shories. Nothing there for us standups. And it really wasn’t all that consistent. Fairly long waits for ones worth taking off on. Still, managed to get a shot of a guy pulling into an ugly one…

Whizzed back south past a completely messy and basically unsurfable Warriewood. Had a look at Northy and down toward Gardens. Not many people out at the former, but there was a good reason. It was really soft and fluffy and weak, despite the okay size. One or two people managed to jag okay sets, but for every one of those there were three really ordinary gutless lumps caught. And as at the Basin, it wasn’t that consistent. The picture below makes it look way better than it was…

From there I headed on to have a look at the old Collaroy. Sadly it was so dire that so far as I could tell, no one was in the water. More weak, scudding messiness basically.

My final stop was at Longy where I spotted a few folks messing about in the beachy inside from the bombies. Quality was on a par with Northy, so nothing much to write home about. Again, if you were in the right spot and got lucky, you could get a bit of a section, but the waits were plentiful. From the look of the beach, there must be a fair number of bluebottles about too…

I didn’t drive down to look at Dee Why, but through the telephoto it looked as though there was a small crowd catching the odd makeable one…

Mona Vale to Dee Why …um yeah

Posted on February 2nd, 2010 in At large, Dee Why, Mona Vale, North Narrabeen.

Hello Friends,

Turned up at the beach around 0630 for a surf with a few mates. Contemplation of the conditions immediately resulted in a decision – to get coffee. 15-20 kts of ESE wind overnight turned the ocean into a choppy mess. The average period is only about 7 seconds, so you have to time it just right to get a steep enough face for a take off. If the ocean was audio, it’d be pink noise.

After getting the coffee on board and sorting out the big questions of the day with the boys, it was time to head off northward for a quick squizz on your behalf. As the pictures show, the situation was only very slightly better at Northy and Mona Vale. The former looked like an awful lot of paddling for some pretty marginal payoffs. The pic is pretty typical of the sets. At Mona it looked to be less consistent but otherwise similar to the situation down south.

The forecast models remain quite hopeful where swell size is concerned. The current reckoning is for the average heights at sea to bump up a bit toward dark tomorrow and then to power up with a 10 sec plus period that night. Come Thursday morning spots that like an east swell could be firing along pretty nicely. The big question is what the wind’ll be doing. Right now the Bureau’s calling for E-NE, so I guess we can hope that it’ll be comparatively light in the morning…

On the latest run of the models, it appears that Thr-Fri will be the peak, but there should still be something fun left over for the weekend warriors.

Go well with your day!

The swell has backed off quite a bit today, but it was looking fairly clean this morning, worth getting out there before it gets blown out as usual!

Out and about: Mona to Northy

Why does someone so flexible have to do warm-up stretches at all?

Norffy very messy and junky, but if you're super keen, rewarding moments to be found.

Hello Friends,

Thought I’d get out and about this morning to see what was happening up at Mona and Northy (and between). Basically the wind is trashing everything. No one was in the water at Mona Vale – and for very good reason. It looked horrid. You can see there’s a bit of size around the place. Had the wind conditions been favourable, I think the odd head high plus set would not have been out of the question. But with the chop as bad as it is, one couldn’t be entirely sure about the actual size of the underlying swell. The best thing about the stop at Mona was the smell of the sea on the wind. Lovely.

Didn’t stop to look at Warriewood or little Narra as the wind was straight onshore and there’d be no hope whatsoever of a wave.

Around at Northy the situation was almost as dire, but there were a few bods in the water working on their moves. Swell doesn’t seem to have a lot of push, so their efforts to get air were not consistently rewarded. The chop was dominating, but if you picked your moment, a little shoulder high section revealed itself every now and again.

Off to have a squizz at points south, so more from me in a bit…

It’s pretty much like a lake out there this morning, although we should see some swell this arrrrvo if the swell charts are anything to go by, fingers crossed!

There’s a few really clean closout’s at MV this morning, if we had any banks it’d be pumping, but we don’t.
