Here we go…

Posted on May 5th, 2012 in Dee Why, South Narrabeen.

Hello Friends,

The swell has begun to fill in this morning. At 0630 it was starting to light up numerous peaks along the North Narrabeen to Collaroy stretch and it was making itself felt from No Man’s to Dee Why point as well. But there will be waves everywhere in Sydney this morning.

Wind was picking up from the SW as per the forecast and the swell seemed to me to still be fairly inconsistent. There were lots of nice looking lines, but folk were sitting out the back at many places and that tells me that there are a few bigger ones in the mix – but that they aren’t all that frequent – yet.

Primary swell direction was dead south according to the MHL data this morning. Average size at sea is around the 2 metre mark and average period is a touch over 8 seconds. Wind is set to go southerly and pick up this morning before going SW later. At first light it was out of the WNW, so the early risers may well have the best of the surface conditions.

Swell should build slowly over the next 24 hours as we get a mix of east and south swell coming in. I’m expecting head high plus regularly tonight and overhead to 1.5x overhead on sets tomorrow and Monday – with the odd bomb bigger than that at optimally exposed locations.

Seeya out there!

Back home to little waves

Posted on May 3rd, 2012 in Dee Why.

Hello Friends,

Actually landed back home yesterday, but it was a sorta jet-laggy haze. This morning the brain seems to be coming back up to speed (hooray for coffee!) and it looks like there’s a little windswell energy about. It’s coming mainly from the east according to the MHL buoy. Offshore the average height is around the metre mark and period is flopping along at a windswelly 7 seconds.

A look around this morning should turn up the occasional waist to chest set wave face at the exposed spots. Wind is supposed to be out of the southerly quarters through the day, so I don’t expect the surface conditions to particularly improve at exposed spots.

Looking ahead, it would seem from this morning’s run of the swell models that we’re coming up on a potentially fun little burst of swell from midweekend to mid next week.

Gotta get to those chores, so catchya again soon!

clean 2 – 3 foot early.

Back to small everbody

Posted on April 14th, 2012 in Dee Why.

Hello Friends,

Can’t fault the weather settings this morning in Sydney. Absolutely spot on in every metric – bar one. Swell is out of the SE at about a metre at 9 seconds. So, it’s not quite flat. Sets at Dee Why beach were in the knee to waist high plus range. They’re coming in at a leisurely frequency though. You’ll want to be in a chilled out mood and on your float-iest water toy.

To the extent it matters, the tide’s hitting low at around 0920.

Outlook for the next few days is for small to flat – particularly tomorrow – and then around midweek the models say we could start to see some solid east swell develop on Sydney’s stretch of the east coast. This is all academic for you correspondent as come next weekend, he expects to be in the high desert of SE California celebrating his Dad’s 91st birthday. Expect one or two postcards from Cali over the next couple weeks…

Go well with your Saturday one and all!

Weather Situation from Australian Bureau of Meteorology: A strong high pressure system centred over southeast New South Wales extends a ridge over most of the state. Later on Saturday a cold front is forced to the south of Australia due to the strength of the high, however the southern-most parts of the coast may see a brief southerly developing behind an associated trough. The high will move slowly towards New Zealand over the next few days, but a strong ridge remains over the state. A trough will begin to develop off the north coast later on Sunday or early Monday in the easterlies along the north of the ridge.
Forecast for Saturday until midnight
Winds
North to northwesterly about 10 knots tending north to northeasterly 10 to 15 knots during the afternoon.
Seas
Below 1 metre.
Swell
Southeasterly about 1 metre.
Sunday 15 April
Winds
Northerly 10 to 15 knots becoming variable below 10 knots during the morning.
Seas
Below 1 metre.
Swell
Easterly up to 1 metre.
Monday 16 April
Winds
Southerly 10 to 15 knots turning southeasterly 15 to 20 knots during the morning.
Seas
Below 1 metre increasing to 1 to 1.5 metres during the afternoon.
Swell
Easterly 0.5 metres.

Nice early.

Smaller again, but definitely waves to be had

Posted on April 13th, 2012 in Dee Why.

Hello Friends,

Another beautiful Sydney autumn morning with fun looking little waves around the place. The primary swell direction has moved around to the NE and the average size at sea is down a touch to about 1.5 metres. Period is up a touch to 9 seconds though. Tide is low at 0815 and high at 1420, so it should be a good morning for a surf. Wind is light now, but will be 10-15 kts from the N to NE by around lunchtime.

From the shape of the forecasts, I’d expect the swell energy to gradually fade and I’m not too encouraged by this morning’s run of the models about the prospects for the weekend, or indeed most of next week.

As always, it will be what it will be, so why not keep on smilin’?

Have a great Friday!

Weather Situation
A strong high pressure system centred over eastern Victoria and southern New South Wales extends a ridge over most of the state and directs a fresh southeasterly airflow over central and northern parts of the coast. The high will move slowly towards New Zealand over the next few days and be the dominant weather system affecting New South Wales, with winds moderating on Thursday then tending mostly moderate northeasterly for Friday and the weekend.
Forecast for Friday until midnight
Winds
Variable below 10 knots becoming north to northeasterly 10 to 15 knots in the early afternoon.
Seas
Below 1 metre.
Swell
southeasterly about 1 metre.
Saturday 14 April
Winds
North to northeasterly about 10 knots tending north to northwesterly around dawn then tending north to northeasterly 10 to 15 knots during the afternoon.
Seas
Below 1 metre increasing to 1 to 1.5 metres by early evening.
Swell
Southeasterly 0.5 metres.
Sunday 15 April
Winds
Northerly 10 to 15 knots turning west to northwesterly below 10 knots during the morning then decreasing to variable below 10 knots during the day.
Seas
Below 1 metre.
Swell
Easterly 0.5 metres.

Clean and chest high sets for the early

Posted on April 12th, 2012 in Dee Why.

Hello Friends,

Not quite as chilly this morning. Dominant swell direction is SE and size at sea is about two metres at 8 to 9 seconds. Wind was WSW at around 10 kts.

I’ve run late this morning due to a flat tyre. Always fun, especially when you haven’t got round to cleaning out the boot in awhile and the jack looks like something retrieved from the Titanic. Life in the first world… it’s so tough. Anyway, the tyre diversion lead to my coming home via Curly and Dee Why at around 0900, so I grabbed a few pictures for you.

As they show, the surface conditions were really quite clean thanks to a light SW breeze and there were definitely a few little waves to be had. The grey skies and cool air temps seem to have reduced the crowds as well. Certainly I’d have expected waist to chest high plus surf to have a few more takers for the first week of school hols.

The ol’ swell models aren’t looking too swell this morning. It would appear much of the east coast will be getting smaller over the next day or so and then we could be in for near flat conditions through to Monday.

After that, we may get a perk to size, but the wind could be an issue across mid week.

Ah well, the juice will return, so in the meantime, get out there and enjoy if you can.

Weather Situation
A strong high pressure system south of Adelaide extends a ridge over southern and western NSW and directs a fresh to strong southerly airflow over central and northern parts of the coast. The high will move slowly east over the next few days and be the dominant weather system affecting NSW, with winds moderating on Thursday then tending mostly moderate northeasterly for Friday and the weekend.

Swell
Southerly about 1.5 metres.
Friday 13 April

Swell
Southeasterly about 1 metre.
Saturday 14 April
Winds
North to northeasterly 5 to 10 knots increasing to 10 to 15 knots during the evening.
Seas
Below 1 metre.
Swell
Southeasterly 0.5 metres.

Cold but good looking in the corner

Posted on April 11th, 2012 in Dee Why.

Hello Friends,

Aside from the bitter cold there were some nice looking south sets hitting Dee Why this morning a little before 0800. The wind is around to the WSW as the day gets started, but the Bureau doesn’t even mention that as a possibility in their 0400 forecast. They warn that we can expect it to go straight southerly and be around the 15-25kt range. There’s a 60% chance of a shower and the high will be 20, so I’d say the plan is to rug up, grab the steamer and make for a corner asap.

Sets at Dee Why were delivering head high wave faces along the beach. On average, the point is a touch smaller than that and less consistent.

This morning’s run of the forecast models paint a bleak picture from about Friday onward. It looks as though all the southern ocean wave energy is going to be pushed well to the east of us and that we could well be in for a week of tiny to near flat conditions.

Here’s hoping they’re wrong!

In the meantime, have yourself a top old Wednesday.

Weather Situation
Winds will remain fresh southerly along the whole coast today as a strong high centred southwest of Victoria extends a ridge over NSW. The high will move slowly east over the next few days with winds gradually easing along the NSW coast.
Forecast for Wednesday until midnight
Winds
Southerly 15 to 25 knots.
Seas
1.5 to 2 metres.
Swell
Southerly 2 metres.
Thursday 12 April
Winds
Southerly 10 to 15 knots becoming variable below 10 knots during the afternoon. Inshore afternoon sea breezes.
Seas
1 to 1.5 metres decreasing to below 1 metre during the morning.
Swell
Southerly about 1.5 metres.
Friday 13 April
Winds
Variable below 10 knots.
Seas
Below 1 metre.
Swell
Southeasterly about 1 metre.

Coming.

Posted on April 10th, 2012 in Dee Why.

With the slight change and strength in wind direction this morning the swell is starting to arrive.  Only 2 foot early in the protected spots but now its the extreme southern corners for waves.  Longy Bombie has increase a couple of feet in the last hour or so.  Win a FCS poncho for these chilly conditions at Surf Photos of You.
