Morning turn

Just back from a tour of the beaches south from south Narrabeen.
Here’s the executive summary:
South Narra: big, messy, no one out
Collaroy: small, not as messy, only one or two chasing waist high things
Dee Why: didn’t see anyone in the water, but didn’t watch for very long either. Big and messy in the beachy, swell angle wrong for the point.
Queenscliff to North Steyne: big, messy, no one out, ferggedit
South Steyne: a bit cleaner and some catchable ones into the head high range, but I’d rate it 5/10 – ie, average.
Bower: shoulder to head high plus, but pretty messy looking when I checked it between 0900-1000. Lotta people in the water, fairly inconsistent, but definitely some fun ones
Not the cleanest conditions, but don't think he'd be complaining (the Bower around 0900)
Bowls to be found amongst the general choppiness at Fairy Bower.
Around 0900, not terribly clean, but you could catch em if you were keen.

Another bout of picture taking by yours truly… started at Manly around 0730 and took pics for about 20 minutes. It was pretty consistent, but not quite at the pace of yesterday. Size was down too, but it was still clean and pretty fun looking – if a wee bit soft. Seemed to me that fishes and mals were had the edge overall. Didn’t take a close look, but it appeared that there were a number of folks hooking waves out at the Bower as well.
Nice use of a little stall to set up the section, midway between Queensy and North Steyne this morning.
Goin' for a reo halfway between Queensy and south Steyne.
Again, there were some zippery sections on the inside at Queensy.
Looks like they had a few fun ones out there this morning.

Posted on April 5th, 2009 in At large, Curl Curl, Fairy Bower, Manly.Sorry about the daily pic gallery showing yesterday… a new bug to chase down, oh joy. Anyway, lotsa average quality waves around for the Sunday crowds. No such thing as a decent uncrowded wave from Northy to Fairy Bower. In fact, I’d guess the same applies up to Palm Beach and I’m pretty sure the eastern suburbs and the Shire will be much the same. Lot of water time getting racked up today – hope you got some!

The north end was well populated this afternoon at North Curly.
Mild, some swell and Sunday adds up to very crowded.
Somewhat junky but okay size at Queenscliff.

The executive summary:
Northy: 6/10
Dee Why beach: 4/10
Dee Why point: 4/10
North Curly: 7/10
Freshwater: 5/10
Queenscliff: 6/10
North Steyne: 6/10
South Steyne: 7/10
Bower: 6/10
Down the beach from North Steyne there were some fine moments for the crowds.
Not as consistent as the beach, but clearly waves at the Bower for the crowds.
North Curly had a solid crowd chasing the odd set like this.
Dee Why point pretty torn up and weird but sections to be had.
Looks like everyone's in at Northy.
Empty grinders, no one out.
Pretty messy but some solid sections at Dee Why.
Not as consistent or as big as at other spots, but some perfectly catchable ones.
Quite busy in the water, but fun size.

Posted on April 2nd, 2009 in At large, Fairy Bower, Long Reef.You know how it is with swell and not great conditions – you keep wondering if maybe it’s improved someplace… the pressure got to RealSurf and so late this morning made a run down to see if the Bower was cleaning up and if by some fluke there was something getting in on the north side of Long Reef. I should know better… but still, had to look.
About a dozen in the water chasing sections in 1.5x overhead sets at the Bower, but the swell was mostly going wide and the rideable bits weren’t too long. Grabbed a couple snaps that make it look better than it probably was…
Long Reef was relatively clean inside, but the quality was strictly so-so…

As promised I went out to see if I could grab a few pics for ya. Not the most photogenic conditions unfortunately. First stop was the Bower and it was looking just plain crazy out there. Lots of water in motion, sets in the 2x or bigger range and only a couple mad people tossing around in it. Saw them get a couple but mostly it was just maintaining through the choppy surface conditions on gradually diminishing shoulders.
A small group of equally demented surf persons were rocking off in front of that boat shed just north from the shops at Bower Lane. Some of the sets were doing some unpleasant looking things amongst the rocks too. The surfers would then paddle out and around to south Steyne where there were some very big and generally messy looking peaks. Again, as with the Bower, the main point seemed to be to get in the water and catch a few on a really big day. Not much in the way of performance surfing going on.
Headed north to see what was happening up at Collaroy. There were a couple folks battling their way out to Brownwater and I even got a picture of one bloke on a wave. Collaroy looked totally out of control, ditto the kick.
Then the rain really set in, so I decamped up to Mactier street for a squiz at the far southern end of Gardens. The rain was bucketing though and I had to wait awhile for it simply to lift enough to grab a snap of the seriously heavy stuff sweeping down the beach from the north. Not surfable by anyone in their right mind. But impressive power and I wonder how it’ll go for the beachfront places along that stretch tonight when the high tide and swell look set to peak around the same time…
If possible I’ll try to get out for one more look at things before close of play today…

Manly

As the tide dropped this morning the Bower picked up and produced some great rides. Until the crowds picked up. But when the tide bottomed North Steyne went ballistic with head high barrels for everyone. The photos don’t 
show the size that well but the action is there. Notice the photo with Northie in the foreground and the Bower action in the background. Unfortunately I picked up a deep fin slash off one wave and had to call an end to the session earlier than I wanted to.

Even on a dull day, there are always folks on the beach at Manly.
Here’s a question: when the local SLSC broadcasts warnings to surfers to get out of the flagged area, they always do it in English. So what happens if an international visitor is the offender? I’ve heard them going off at an apparently recalcitrant surfer and wondered to myself if maybe the object of the ire was blissfully unaware of their transgression.
The Bower was definitely cleaner and bigger yesterday when I checked it. This morning it just looked shocking. Really lumpy and messy out there. On the good side there were some okay size sets (see the pic below), so there is some swell around if you are super keen.
