The Goat’s Forecast
Posted on April 19th, 2012 in Goat's Forecast.Surf forecast issued Thursday 19 April 2012: EIGHT day outlook for Sydney:
Have you had enough rain yet !???
Well looks like there could be a little more on the way according to the Bureau, though mainly showers rather than heavy rain:
But that’s's not really the issue is it? If you’re going for a surf you’re going to get wet anyway!
Surf – There are waves aplenty at the moment and that East North East swell looks set to just keep on coming. But, hmmm – Well if you’re young and/or have a good immune system, you’ll be keen… Others might feel it’s a bit dicey – with stormwater runoff at most beaches on the north side – including thru large pipes like at “North Stain” and “Freshwater” – not to mention the south side – and lagoon entrances opened wide from the letting out accumulated gunk from Queenscliff, Curl Curl, Dee Why, Narrabeen Lagoons - so maybe wait a few days.
And if you think ‘ahah, should be OK at beaches further north’… up there you’ll find the Hawkesbury River in full flow transporting quite a bit of sewage, ag chemicals, fertilisers, pesticides etc and general gunk from all the way back upstream to Warragamba and beyond, out to sea to swirl around offshore and some to head back in toward the coast. A telltale sign – the big log on the beach washing round in the surf, like the one I just saw (trees don’t grow in the ocean, they don’t) .
Not a pretty picture water-qualitywise.
My own rule of thumb (having had my share of ear, sinus, throat and other infections from being “keen” to surf after and in rain over the years, is: If the water looks dirty – it IS dirty.
But you’ll make up your own mind – it’s a risk management thing.
Anyhoo…
Friday – Saturday: 3-4 metres East North East
Sunday – Wednesday: 2-3 metres East North East
Thursday – Friday: about 2 metres East North East
Water temp is around 22.
Take care out there.
