Historic Opportunity to Protect the Coral Sea
Posted on February 15th, 2012 in Can you help?, Environment, Good causes, News Stories, Opinion, People who surf, Surfrider Foundation, Top stories.Friends of RealSurf,
The good folks at Protect Our Coral Sea have contacted us about a petition they are running which is aimed at getting the Federal Government to include important reefs in the proposed management plan. It’s very easy to make yourself heard on this one!
The Coral Sea is a tropical marine jewel which lies east of the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park. It’s one of the last places on Earth where large marine animals can still be found in great numbers.
The government’s draft plan for this iconic area leaves the majority of species-rich coral reefs, important breeding sites open to fishing.
Right now the federal government is considering the fate of Australia’s Coral Sea.If the petition widget isn’t showing below on your web browser, please just click here to visit Protect Our Coral Sea where you’ll find it on the front page.
Happenings Next Weekend, In Byron Bay Today’s Weekend Review.
Posted on October 16th, 2011 in Byron, Good causes, Local Colour, Surf culture, surf photography.Yes folks its true there was not a lot happening over the last week in Byron Bay. But there are some events that are well worth taking note of for next Saturday the 22nd in the bay. For those into photography and music, there will be an exhibition up at The Top Shop. Some featured shutter bugs will be George Greenough, Matty Yates & Justin Crawford, with live music by Josh Hamilton from 11am till1pm. Also on the same day at the Byron Bay Community centre. Andrew Wells from Grown surfboards will be teaching his handicraft in a wooden surfboard workshop. This will happen between 4-5pm you don’t want t miss that. Last but certainly no least, Saturday the 22nd is the Byron Breast Cancer Day running at Railway Park in town from 10am till 2pm. There will be some entertainment, music, talks Yoga etc. This is an important charity fundraising event. To be honest it’s probably going to need some extra support, so if you can get on over to it as well, while all the other exciting stuff is going on, that would be way cool, In Byron Bay Today.

Qld flood disaster fundraiser: Diggers, Thr 24 Feb
Posted on February 14th, 2011 in Can you help?, Good causes, Top stories.“Bintang” from the forums has written in to tell us of a flood fundraiser his wife’s pulled together. Here’s his message:
My wife is organising a fundraiser for victims of Qld’s disasters. It’s at the Harbord Diggers on Thursday the 24th of Feb. It’s a dinner and dance with music by Carribean Soul(, the guys who played at the old Sands on a Sunday arvo). Ttickets are $60 with all proceeds going to Rotary. There are some awesome goodies donated for the silent auction. My wifes email is on the link. Could you put a little piece up for it? Otherwise I might put it on the forum. Cheers. Paul.

Movember Time, In Byron Bay Today’s Weekend review.
Posted on November 14th, 2010 in Byron, Good causes.
It’s that time of year again folks, its Movember, in Byron Bay today. That means it’s time to pay a little attention and awareness to men’s health, mainly prostate cancer and depression, although there many other things that take us blokes down if we don’t be aware, step up to the plate, and ask for help when it’s needed. I for one have lost too many much loved mates this year, and there are more struggling right this moment. Now there is something you can do to help with raising funds for research and awareness. You can sponsor a bro that’s growing a Mo. Local surfer and all round good bloke, Loyd Lawton is growing a Mo for charity this Movember, you can keep tabs and sponsor Loyds efforts here. Also our buddy Troy (Julio) Jackson is seriously unwell, there will be a massive community party and fundraiser branded the T-Fest next weekend at Red Devil Park to help out, we’ll keep you posted on what’s happening with that during this week, In Byron Bay Today.
