Aint they cute, well maybe not, but they did get waves in Byron bay today
Aint they cute, well maybe not, but they did get waves in Byron bay today

Just ask anyone, they’ll tell you. ‘There was no surf to be had In Byron Bay Today’. I’m here to tell you that’s crap. There were waves, just not in front of the online cams, so people had to actually move to find them. If you don’t get up and go look to see for yourself, you don’t reap the rewards. If Byron’s famous breaks ain’t cooking people tend to call it a no surf day. But there were waves to be had, granted they were small and they were not right in the bay itself. But we found them, and so did a few others, we also found some waves that nobody even bothered to look at. So remember, next time your muttering about the lack of surf. Get up off the couch; get behind the wheel and do a good old fashioned surf check. Because you’ll soon find there’s an abundant supply of empty waves to be found, if you make the effort to sniff them out, In Byron Bay Today.

There was a gentle westerly breeze and it was looking downright pretty In Byron Bay Today. But there was little swell to speak of. We did manage to track down a reasonable peak in Byron and start a shoot. There were a few  getting a couple and just managing to eke out a little speed on their fishes.  It wasn’t big, but  it was cute and everyone was having a good time. Hours later as light was failing, we had several folks all excited to find out they would see themselves surfing in the site. Then it happened. I noticed two simple little words, which strike terror into the heart of every photographer, that’s ever used digital equipment. The screen read, Card Error!  It had arrived, the scourge of photographers. Card Error, the grim reaper of digital photos. Upon regaining consciousness in the car park, Yoko reminded me of what had just happened. When I regained consciousness for the second time, she decided it was wise not mention it again. And so here we are. The sun has set and we have no surf shots. We still have all of shots of the people we met. For those who were hoping to see themselves surfing however, I’m sorry for your disappointment. Hopefully we’ll catch you next time you find yourself in Byron Bay. For the rest of us we thought let’s have a little reminder of just how good the last summer was to us, In Byron Bay this year.

Well it’s time for the In Byron Bay Today Weekend Windup again.  It’s been an ok kind of week this week in the bay. From a surfers perspective it’s actually been considerably better than it looked. There has been plenty of choice and that’s a joyous thing. We had medium sized peaks to thick hollow beachies for the little whiteboards. Plus long clean lines sweeping into the bay, just begging for a slide on a log. It wasn’t perfect but it was uncrowded and very surfable. It’s simply been a matter of choosing what you’d like to ride and heading to the most appropriate spot to ride it. If you didn’t score a few this week in the bay then you didn’t look hard enough or you’re too fussy, because we got heaps, In Byron Bay this week.

It started off moisty and dark but things steadily improved In Byron Bay Today.  The swell backed off a little providing  some reasonably surfable peaks around the ocean side,  and some  little logger lines in the bay. Town is still really quiet, but no doubt that’ll change, with the long weekend, which usually see’s the town swell in numbers for a few days.  With a bit of luck we could be seeing some better waves soon too. If you’re into Dolphins you may like to go for a walk in the bay and check it out. We’ve spotted them playing close to shore for the last 4 days in a row. It’s good for the soul to see the wildlife at play while out and about In Byron Bay Today.

Winter has officially arrived In Byron Bay Today. How do I know this? Well the empty beaches and people wearing wetsuits are a bit of a dead giveaway. Or it could be the amount of people heading for the lighhouse hoping to bump a humpback. Or  maybe it’s that my calendar says it’s the 1st of June.  But no the reason I know it’s winter is this, the swell is so utterly south that’s driving straight past the bay. Now that has got winter written all over it.  The water is still warm but if you’re coming to the bay you’ll need to bring some rubber wear and maybe a wetsuit too. One side of the cape had some good sized semi bumpy, but joyously thick and juicy peaks.  The other side was a whole world away with small clean logger lines, which had the old school crew beaming widely. So it was all systems go for both camps. Where you went was simply a matter of what board you felt like riding……..In Byron Bay Today.

Well people it was the last day of Autumn In Byron Bay Today. Now I’m usually a big fan of autumn in the Bay. But I must say this autumn has been a bit of a weird one. Major storms heavy seas and a whole lot of rain and little bursts of sunshine and flat spells in between. We’re all hoping winter will bring a stable weather pattern, yet we shall see. The swell is quite small. Ok, Ok, major understatement it’s really small and its loggers only surf in the bay, even on a log you’d need to be keen. The day was taken up with ducking and weaving from rain spells to try and get a shoot. There were a few slides, some unruly rides and just a bit too much tide. But it’s still Byron and it’s all ok, In Byron Bay Today.

Byron Bay Today’s Weekend Windup May 29th 2009

Sometimes you just got to go, in Byron Bay Today.
Sometimes you just got to go, in Byron Bay Today.

Welcome to the In Byron Bay Today Weekend Windup. What an radical week it’s been. I mean seriously we’ve had it all. Storms, radical tides, huge swells, destructive wind and then the exact opposite, calm quiet and tiny swell. We got  blessed with some classic barrels. The crew were excited and hoping it would last a few days. But it was a flash in the pan; it was all over in a matter of hours. But we’re a resilient mob here In Byron bay and some of us old salts will surf just about anything, with no more rationale for it than the idea of just getting wet. After all, surfing is meant to be about having fun. And fun was in plentiful supply as the end of the week saw small but utterly perfect logger waves slide on into the bay. The only sign of there ever being a storm at all was the dune erosion and the deep copper coloured water.  This week has been massive we’ve all had to face destructive winds, floods, massive tides and swell. Yet it all fell back into perspective as the week rolled on, revealing itself as just another big event lived the way we do it here. One day at a time, In Byron Bay Today.

It shines when it shines, and shine it did In Byron Bay Today. Just a stunner if you like sweet little logger waves and a nice sunny day. If you’re keen to pull out anything shorter though you’d need to head south right now. But if loggings your bag you then you would have been stoked to be in Byron bay today. There was  relaxed crew in the water. Until a couple of people arived who wanted to turn it into a hassle, but they were swiftly dealt with. Said hasslers were asked to pull their heads in or be on their way. Sounds harsh, but hey why should a peaceful crew of  both locals and visitors alike have to endure such a joyous day being spoilt by a few greedy souls that want to compete. So marching orders were issued with a gentle reminder that it’s not a competition here. And so the rest of the folks went on to enjoy a very enjoyable day. There were slides, nasal rides and plenty of big smiles from most that came to play In Byron Bay Today.

Well just when we’d gotten used to the swell, it was almost gone In Byron Bay Today. Even the loggers were struggling a little in today. It’s not that the surf was completely flat there were waves to be had . But the sand hasn’t settled down yet so it’s all wobbly junky and twisted, it looks clean enough, until you try to ride it. The bank that fired yesterday was gone by today. Finaly the sun appeared and you could visibly see the relief faces. So those who got out and about in the bay today enjoyed themselves just the same even if the waves were weird. We all started to recover from our storm induced cabin fever thanks to the warmth of the sun; it may well be that a few rays was just what the doctor ordered In Byron Bay Today.

There were some pretty chunky little barrels to be had In Byron Bay Today. The little white board set, finally got there day. And about time too, the crew that don’t pick up a log when it’s small, have had to head out of town for a few weeks now to find waves. So it was good to see them get their share in Byron bay today.
