wozthatyou.com surf photos: Narrabeens 6/5/2012

Posted on May 7th, 2012 in Top stories.

I’m sure the buzz around the place right now is all about today’s conditions – and spectacular sun rise – but Sunday delivered some pretty awesome conditions as well as the run of Huey goodness rolled on.

I spent 3 hours shooting yesterday between 8-11am and divided my time shooting between North Narra and the Gardens which also gave me a good view down to Southy. Everywhere I looked it was pumping nicely with surfers emerging from the surf exhausted but stoked after their sessions.

The shots are now posted and can be viewed here.

Cheers and have a great week.

Doug

wozthatyou.com surf photos – Easter Weekend Wrap Up

Posted on April 9th, 2012 in Top stories.

What’s better than scoffing down chocolate Easter eggs and bunnies on the Easter long weekend? Having swell and excellent weather is what!

The swell that started arriving mid last week continued right through the weekend much to the delight of all the punters who stayed in Sydney for Easter. Not only did we experience great surf conditions on the water but the weather was very un-Easter-like with sunny, clear skies most of the weekend bar that wicked storm that hit Sunday night.

I managed to get out to photograph a couple of sessions on Friday at North Narra and Curly and then back again at Curly Sunday morning which was more than enough to satisfy me. All the surf photos have been posted and can be viewed on the links above.

And how about the moon rise on Friday night? It was quite a spectacular sight as it rose above the North Curly head land. Just awesome!

Have a great week.

Cheers,

Doug

wozthatyou.com – New Pics 31.3.12

Posted on April 1st, 2012 in Top stories.

It was such a fantastic weekend weather and surf-wise I really have nothing to add except to say that it was a beaut morning at North Narra on Saturday between 7-9am with brilliant sunshine and some pretty decent sets that were enough to draw a sizeable crowd. I parked myself on the rocks near the pool so had a good angle on both lefts, rights and the few catching themselves some fun ones off the point.

To view all the pics just click here.

Here’s looking forward to plentiful swell for the Easter long weekend.

Have a good one.

Cheers,

Doug

VIDEO: Footage of Michael Peterson surfing Winki Pop in 1977

Posted on March 30th, 2012 in Top stories.

In 1977, Michael Peterson was widely regarded as one of the greatest surfers of his generation. And he still is. Some very good obituaries have already appeared (see links below) and undoubtedly many more will follow as surfing’s global tribe reflects on the passing of an iconic figure.

In retrospect it was good luck that I was in Australia in 1977 to shoot footage for a surf movie. But it was astonishingly good luck that I happened to be hanging out in the then very rustic Bells carpark a few days before the contest. Conditions that morning were just about perfect. The solid head high plus swell was brushed by a faint offshore under clear blue skies. Winki was going off.

I’d watched it for awhile and because there were a few names in the water, I was tossing up whether or not to join them, or to do the right thing and shoot some footage first.

Suddenly MP appeared from out of the bushes near where I was parked. He came over, looking around warily in the way that he did, and said something along the lines of “You want to get some film man? Gimme a hundred bucks and I’ll go out and you can get some shots.” Having been down this particular road once before with Michael at Kirra, I knew that it was a certainty that I’d a) be eating beans for a couple weeks thanks to the budget hit and b) I’d definitely get some keepers.

After attending to the financial issue, MP produced his board and shouldering the big Miller fluid head and the freshly loaded Bolex H16, we bush bashed our way down to a good position for me to shoot the Winki line up. Michael changed and a minute or two later he was paddling out into the line up at his usual amazing speed.

He only stayed in the water for about 20 mins, but by the time he came in, I had close to 5 mins of keepers.

To mark Michael’s passing, I’ve grabbed out some of that footage and turned it into a short youtube video to give you a taste of how good this guy was. When Rabbit saw this footage years ago he remarked that it just might be some of the last shot of MP before he fell into full-blown mental illness.

One other note, as indicated at the end of the clip, I have about an hour of edited down footage from that trip and close to half of it includes Michael. There’s a short sequence from Kirra and then quite a bit from the ’77 Stubbies as my pal Guy and I followed MP’s progress right through to the final. So yep, there’s footage from the famous semi against Rabbit.

There’s also footage of North Narrabeen (with Terry Fitz et al) and Dee Why (Peter Crawford doing a turning 360).

For decades now I’ve been meaning to turn it into a proper movie. But I’ve never really had the resources and time. I’m gonna make another effort which I’ll document at a www.surfin77.com (not online until early April). Check it out some time!

Solid obituary by Fred Pawle from the Australian

MP is gone

Posted on March 29th, 2012 in Top stories.

Michael Peterson has died.

He was 59 and, according to early reports, suffered a heart attack.

As many of you will know, Michael suffered from undiagnosed schizophrenia which lead eventually to a complete breakdown and a withdrawal from surfing in the late 70′s.

I had the privilege of meeting MP in 1977 and over a couple months, I shot 16mm footage of him at Kirra, the ’77 Stubbies and all too briefly, at Winki Pop (Bells).

(I’ll try to put up a video clip from the footage in the next day or three…)

Vale MP.
