Vid: this is a pretty nutty artificial wave
Posted on February 16th, 2011 in Just for fun, Top stories, weird surf.Wave pools have been around for years now, and from what I hear, some are kinda fun. But the people at Wavegarden have taken things to a whole new level. According to their website, their computer controlled wave making system can be used in both natural and artificial bodies of water. In the video below you can see their test facility wave located in the Basque country. Basically it looks like a large-ish farm reservoir in a pretty, rural setting. The wave they generate – although only about waist high – is of exceptional quality. According to the blurb on their site, there is no in principle reason why it couldn’t be scaled up into something very interesting.
Here’s a little snippet from their website:
Wavegarden is a man-made wave that creates ideal conditions for surfing, as well as a broadly appealing range of other wave sports such as body boarding, kayaking, and stand up paddling. Early testing and professional feedback show Wavegarden to be the closest thing to an ocean break.
With Wavegarden you can create a surf spot anywhere in the world and surf it anytime you like. Our technology can create a beach with gentle waves for non-surfers or a challenging wave for surfers of all levels.
The patented Wavegarden technology can be applied to a variety of existing bodies of water: from lakes and lagoons, to reservoirs and large ponds.
In each case, perfect waves of all sizes, shapes and speeds are consistently generated in a safe, natural environment using much less energy than any other wave generator in history.
A Wavegarden wave can be programmed to adapt to any type of wave to suit various client needs, as per each customised design (recommended size 1.6m):
From their technical descriptions, it seems that the water body needs to have a very uniform bottom and water level and from the pictures it looks like this is lined with some kind of heavy plastic. They reckon it is a very low energy system, so one wonders how the propagate the waves. Apparently they are able to precisely control the shape of a wave too, so I’m curious if maybe it involves some sort of inflatable membrane that can be made to abruptly bulge up underwater… anyway, however they do it, this is the first human generated wave that I’ve thought looked like it might actually be pretty fun to surf!

You think Sydney’s cold in winter? Check out Nova Scotia.
Posted on March 21st, 2010 in News Stories, Surf culture, Top stories, weird surf.According to this story from Canada’s CBC TV, Nova Scotia has some great waves during winter. But they’re just a wee bit chilly by Australian standards… an interesting little yarn about how a rural village called Lawrencetown Beach is benefiting from an influx of surfers. Lots of tough Canadian surfers and some very fun looking waves too…
Here’s a teaser:
If you have twenty minutes, the full show is well worth the time to check it out.

Grow your own artificial reef?
Posted on August 18th, 2009 in Top stories, weird surf.I’ve no idea if this could possibly work. The mind boggles!
The artificial Reef will be constructed electrolytically. By applying a week electric current in seawater mineral material will build up on the cathode (negative pole). Chemically this material is equivalent to limestone or coral and will be an excellent host for catalyzing sea-life.

Byron Bay Today’s Weekend Windup 11th July o9
Posted on July 12th, 2009 in Byron, Just for fun, Local Colour, Surf Reports, Weather, weird surf.Welcome to In Byron Bay Today’s Weekend Windup. It was a bit of a wintery, windy and woolly old week in the bay. We started off well enough, with glorious weather early in the week, warm with gentle offshore breezes. But by mid week it quickly degraded into windy, wet and bloody cold. All that blustering and yet we didn’t begin to see any real swell until late Thursday. Now if there was a theme for this week, it’s the grossly unprepared surfing population, both residents and visitors alike. People just don’t expect it to get this cold this far north, and so there was much grumbling from the majority about not having enough rubber. Some were turning blue in boardies and vests. The crew have been spinning out about how cold it’s been, but how soon we all forget. We go through this every year in the bay. It can and does get cold here. In fact if you live here you need more variations of wetsuits than further south. Down the coast you get good thick and warm rubber. It does you all winter spring and autumn. But in Byron, well you need a bit of everything, lighter rubber for the warmer days. slightly heavier for the cold and windy days, and an array of differing thickness vests for spring and autumn. Although the water’s warmer, the wind and air temperature can vary quite radically in winter. So when you drive into town pack enough rubber to make a choice. Because in winter it can be summery & warm one minute, and downright bloody freezing the next, In Byron Bay Today.
PS enjoy the BBQ today guys, wish we could be there, being an old Longy buy myself.
Byron Bay Today June 29th 09 + Dec 08 Most popular.
Posted on June 30th, 2009 in Byron, Just for fun, Local Colour, Site News, Surf Reports, weird surf.First off, the way it was In Byron Bay Today. It started out dead flat. Not too inspiring, but as the day progressed the westerly backed off and few small lines began to appear. This quickly got most us interested as was clean & although small well shaped. Unfortunately it also attracted the interest of the hire board set. Beginners with attitude yeh what fun.
But there were a few nice little waves. And much fun was had by all but a few kooks who tried to play tough guys. But most of this update is not actually about today. This is the first of our ‘Most Popular Images of In Byron bay Today’ for summer. That’s right folks our opinions had nothing to do with this. These are the photos from December 2008 that you guys have clicked on the most over the last seven months. We don’t know whether they are your friends, whether you like the photos, or just dug the comment and they made ya laugh. But whatever it was, these are your favourites and not just by a little bit either, every one of these photos has pulled more than two thousand requests, some of them much, much more. Don’t forget tomorrow we’ll be putting together ‘Best of In Byron bay Today’ for January 2009, it should be fun, more scenery
& better waves.
Byron Bay Today June 7th 2009
Posted on June 9th, 2009 in Byron, Cool Picks, Just for fun, Local Colour, Surf Reports, weird surf. There was a gentle westerly breeze and it was looking downright pretty In Byron Bay Today. But there was little swell to speak of. We did manage to track down a reasonable peak in Byron and start a shoot. There were a few getting a couple and just managing to eke out a little speed on their fishes. It wasn’t big, but it was cute and everyone was having a good time. Hours later as light was failing, we had several folks all excited to find out they would see themselves surfing in the site. Then it happened. I noticed two simple little words, which strike terror into the heart of every photographer, that’s ever used digital equipment. The screen read, Card Error! It had arrived, the scourge of photographers. Card Error, the grim reaper of digital photos. Upon regaining consciousness in the car park, Yoko reminded me of what had just happened. When I regained consciousness for the second time, she decided it was wise not mention it again. And so here we are. The sun has set and we have no surf shots. We still have all of shots of the people we met. For those who were hoping to see themselves surfing however, I’m sorry for your disappointment. Hopefully we’ll catch you next time you find yourself in Byron Bay. For the rest of us we thought let’s have a little reminder of just how good the last summer was to us, In Byron Bay this year.
The way it was In Byron Bay May 11th 2009
Posted on May 12th, 2009 in Byron, Just for fun, Local Colour, Surf Reports, weird surf.Well it’s still logger heaven In Byron Bay Today. There’s plenty of swell further south but it’s not hit here yet. The waves were worth for lugging out a log. But if you’re not into logging there are some really good solid peaks starting to appear just a little out of town if you want to get your shortie out. But you’ll have to get out and look for them, which is usually the case at this time of year. However we stayed into town, to shoot the old crew as we had a visit from the ol, master shaper himself Bob Brown so we hung around town with Brownie and shot what was on offer. Speaking of Brownie, we’ll be giving away another custome made hand shaped Bob Brown board later in the year to one of our subscribers. He makes a seriously some nice shortboard too so get in get subscribed In Byron Bay Today.
BTW guys, we’ve run into a few Real Surfers up here now, and naturally we’ve shot them, with a camera of course
. Point being, if you’re coming into Byron for a trip, keep an eye out for us on the beach or hit our contact page and flick me an email to lets us know to look out for you. We’re gonna try and shoot as many RealSurfers as possible In Byron Bay Today
The Weekend Windup In Byron Bay May 8th 2009
Posted on May 9th, 2009 in Byron, Comment, Cool Picks, Editor's picks, Just for fun, Local Colour, Surf Reports, weird surf.Welcome to the In Byron Bay Today Weekend Windup. it’s been pretty busy up here this week, not much swell, but last weeks big ocean swim, a QLD long weekend, The Byron Bay Malibu Classic and the Byron triathlon. No wonder the joint is packed right now. But it’s all about raising bucks for charity so it’s cool. Speaking of cool, our mate Ron bolted his spare foot onto the nose of his stick. Entered the Byron Classic and demanded he be scored a hang five each wave. There’s nothing like an irreverent amputee. He also reckons if you’re complaining about other surfers, your surfing must not be good enough to keep you entertained, and that you’re taking the joy of surfing as a right not as the gift it is. we say Hear, hear to that Ron.
As for the surf; it’s been small folks, but there are a few little wedgy peaks around if you make an effort to go look for them. Word has it we may see some more swell soon. But either way who could complain, if you’re lucky enough to find yourself, In Byron Bay Today.
In Byron Bay May 3rd 2009
Posted on May 4th, 2009 in Byron, Just for fun, Local Colour, Surf Reports, weird surf. And so today we saw Winter Whales Ocean swim In Byron Bay Today. Again the swimmers were spoilt with a crystal clear passage through the bay. With no signs of the massive beast that’s reputedly been spotted in the bay several times during the last week. But no point fretting it’s Byron, there’s always tails of big fish in the bay.
For the Logger Crew it was kinda fun, well actually heaps of fun. But the Little Whiteboard Set had to look elsewhere as there just wasn’t enough power for them in the bay. The waves at the moment are pretty soft, it’s just the way the banks are currently formed. No doubt it will pass and we’ll see more barrels rolled out this year. Hopefully sooner than later……….In Byron Bay Today.
