RED BULL JUNIOR SURF MASTERS CARVES UP SYDNEY’S BEACHES

Posted by: on August 12th, 2008

If you’re between 15-20 years old, and dream of one day becoming a professional surfer like Aussie World Champion Mick Fanning, then get your wax out and your board ready cos’ Red Bull is on the lookout for the next big name in surfing!

Sydney’s Avalon and Cronulla beaches will be hosting two of the key qualifying events for the first ever Red Bull Junior Surf Masters, presented by current World Champion Mick Fanning.

Taking place on Saturday 23rd August (Avalon Beach) and Sunday 24th August (Cronulla Beach) both kick off at 8am. Red Bull Junior Surf Masters is a first time event being held across NSW this July and August giving young surfers an amazing opportunity to go head-to-head with Australia’s best Pro Junior surfers. The first prize is the biggest ever awarded for a junior surf event in Australia and is designed to help up-and-coming surfers launch their pro career into the World Qualifying Series (WQS) and beyond! Total prize pool for the whole comp is $50,000 – how cool is that?!!

How it works is that a series of five qualifying events will take place in various NSW locations. The top four surfers from each event (20 in total) will then be invited to battle it out on the water at the Red Bull Junior Surf Masters Trials to be held at Queenscliff on Sydney’s Northern Beaches, on Friday 29th August, 2008.

The top four from the Trials will then compete against 16 Pro Junior Surfers, hand-picked by Mick Fanning in a new innovative surfing format called ‘Torched’.

Mick Fanning is stoked to give something back to grass roots surfing and will be attending the Red Bull Junior Surf Masters Finals at Queenscliff to watch all the future Aussie pros in action! He’ll be joined by talented young Aussie surfer Julian Wilson (currently carving it up on the WQS Junior Pro tour), who will be one of the 16 Pro Juniors competing in the Finals.

“An opportunity like Red Bull Junior Surf Masters doesn’t come along very often and could be just the break these young guys need to launch their surfing careers,” said Fanning. “It will be an intense competition designed to pick only the best surfers, but is the first step that could realistically see someone go from their local beach to some of the most amazing surf venues in the world.”

“If you love to surf like me and are keen to take the sport beyond a hobby, then you’d be mad not to enter!” continued Fanning.

To apply to compete at either Avalon or Cronulla events, all you have to do is head to www.redbull.com.au and download an application form for the qualifying events. Applications cost $30, with all proceeds going to SNSW Surfing Development.  Even if you’re not competing, you can still enter the online competition for you and five mates tohang out with Mick Fanning at the Red Bull Junior Surf Masters finals in style – now that’s some serious star treatment!

RED BULL JUNIOR SURF MASTERS MAKES WAVES AT LENNOX HEAD

Lennox Head, NSW — Local Suffolk Park surfer Nick Colbey is the winner of the Red Bull Junior Surf Masters qualifying event at Lennox Head. Colbey surfed intelligently in a testing final by selecting the best quality waves and surfing them to shore with flair and precision.

“It was really tough out there,” said a thrilled Colbey afterwards, “It was difficult to judge which waves were going to link up to the inside bank and allow you a good score.” Colbey, 18, surfed his best wave for well over 100 meters – a ride that took him out of sight of judges and spectators and required a sprint up Lennox Beach to return to the contest site.

Colbey is the North Coast’s current Regional Open Champion and says Red Bull Junior Surf Masters is the best event he has ever entered. “The facilities are amazing, it’s affordable to enter and the prize money (for the Final) is the biggest ever for an Australian junior event. I can’t wait to get to Sydney to mix it up with the other regional finalists. I’m at a stage in my life when I have to decide if I want to pursue a full time surfing career and success in Sydney could definitely help my chances.”

After an excellent start to proceedings, surf conditions were made challenging by onshore winds and a decreasing swell for the Finals. Two of the stand out surfers from earlier today – Brent Savage and Damo Norman – were eliminated in the hotly contested field.

Kingscliff’s Brad King finished second, Coffs Harbour surfer Alex Maniatis third, and Kingscliff’s Kieran Lloyd took fourth place. All four will represent the North Coast region when the Red Bull Junior Surf Masters concludes at Queenscliff (August 29-31). They will face finalists from the other four qualifying events (20 surfers in total). The top four finalists from the Trials will then face a field of the best 16 Pro Junior Surfers in Australia, chosen by the current ASP World Champion, Mick Fanning.

Head judge, Nick “Zippy” Pearson was impressed by the overall standard throughout today’s event. “The North Coast has a strong reputation for producing talented surfers and judging by today’s efforts, there’s every sign that the trend will continue.”

Pearson had particularly high praise for Brad King and Nick Colbey. “Those guys are surfing up on the level you need to be at, in junior events and I think they could do well in Sydney at the Trials.”

The last three qualifying events are taking place at Merewether, Avalon and Cronulla Beaches. Applications are still open, just head to www.redbull.com.au, follow the links to Red Bull Junior Surf Masters, and download an application form. Applications cost $30, with all proceeds going to SNSW Surfing Development.
