RealSurf’s Don and Shari joined a hardy band of surfers in the paddleout at Manly beach to kick off the Manly Festival of Surfing. It was a pretty ordinary sort of afternoon weatherwise, but the vibe was cheerful and the ocean obliging. Here are a few snaps of the paddleout…
Waiting for the signal to begin the paddleout.
And they're off. The paddleout begins...
Holding the mixed waters aloft before paddling out to the centre of the circle.
At the conclusion of the formal opening ceremony, small bottles of ocean water from around Australia were poured into a wooden bowl. These were carried down the Corso to the beach and, somewhat miraculously, paddled out to the circle of surfers bobbing about a hundred metres or so off the beach.
The circle forms...
The mixed waters join the sea at Manly.
Folks paddle in and the festival's launched.

Manly is definitely no stranger to surfboard displays. But take a walk around town from now until 9 November and you’ll see some pretty unusual looking ones in the windows of local shops and restaurants.
These surfboards have been painted and sculpted by some of the best local artists and will be out on display for you to enjoy throughout the Manly Festival of Surfing.
Then, they’ll go into hiding until Monday, 30 November. That night, the Global Surf Industries will host a live auction at the Steyne Hotel and all proceeds will go to the Disabled Surfers Association and Surfaid.
Global Surf Industries, once again, shows their big heart. This is the second year that they have pioneered this event and donated the 30 free surfboards for artists to paint and sculpt.
To place a silent bid, check them out and make your bid at our on-line gallery!
OR attend the final live auction on Monday 30 November at The Steyne Hotel.
On-line bidding closes 4pm (est) Monday 30 November.
Bids can only be trumped in person at the Live Auction Event:
Level 2, The Steyne Hotel, 75 The Corso Manly
6pm Monday 30 November
Here’s a link to the official Manly Festival of Surfing web site:
