Setty, but here

Hello Friends,

Beautiful conditions, if a bit cold this morning. Quite a crew in the water at Dee Why point to deal with the fresh-baked south swell. Seemed to be quite a wait between sets though and because the line is so long, the beachy is virtually all close-outs. Biggest sets I saw were in the 1.5x overhead range.

Since yesterday afternoon, the size at sea has only bumped up slightly to around 2.5 metres on average off Sydney. It’s still dead south, but the good thing is that the power setting has crept up another notch from around 10 seconds yesterday to 11 seconds now.

Interestingly, the peak swell energy is currently hitting the Sydney region. It’s almost as big up to around the mid-northcoast from the look of the buoy data, but it’s distinctly smaller down south.

The outlook remains for the swell to chuff along at about this power and size today and into tomorrow, with the peak currently set to reach us during the day Sunday.

Wind is around 10-12kts from the west as I write this and the call is for it to build into the 20-30kt range (although it probably won’t be that strong right inshore). Tomorrow looks like being about the same.

I’m planning to get out and about with a camera (I’ve got Nikon’s D300 to test), so stay tuned for a few more snaps.

Go well!

It’s all happening

Just took this snap around noon:

Late take-off fails to go to plan

This was earlier today:

This one closed out a few seconds later, but nice to see that kind of size around the place.

Hello Friends,

Again, very cold to start off this morning. But there were a hardy few in the water when I finally had enough light for a couple pics. Sets are pretty reasonable size too. The swell has pushed up into the two metre range from an average height of around 1.5 metres. It’s coming out of the SSE, as it has for the last four days, and the average period is also still plugging along at around 9 seconds. To keep things interesting, Huey’s also mixing in some very long period stuff – as in 14 seconds.

Wind is out of the west at around 10-15 kts on the north side of the bridge, while down at Kurnell and Little Bay, it’s more out of the SSW.

The outlook is for the wind to push up strongly though. By this afternoon it could be 25-30 kt from the south – and building to 30-35 kts by evening. Naturally, as that wind comes up, so will the swell. The Bureau is warning “Swell: SE 1.5 metres, increasing to 2.5 metres this afternoon, and 3 to 3.5 metres tonight. Waves breaking dangerously close inshore tonight. ” Oh, and there could be thunderstorms as well!

From the look of the forecast models, it would appear that the swell will peak overnight, but still be powering along at close to maximum intensity first thing tomorrow morning. The wind will be a major issue though as the Bureau is forecasting 20-30 kts S-SW, building to 30-35kts before backing off in the afternoon to 18-23 kts.

Wednesday is expected to be smaller.

All good!

Go well with your day and check back soon!

Nice clean lines on a very cold morning under showery skies.
