"Stay happy and you'll be perfectly fine" - Jack Norris

Junky old end to the year

Hello Friends,

10-15 kts of junk-inducing SE wind to greet early risers in Sydney for the last day of 2014. Swell has pushed up a little overnight so south magnets would have the odd chest high wave face in the messy mix. Average period is 9 seconds according to the MHL buoy. Next tide is a low at 1140. All and all a ho-hum finish to the year.

Wind is expected to work its way around to the NE for this afternoon, so that could possibly mean the odd slightly better one in the usual corners. But my expectations are modest.

New Year’s day should see the wind still out of the NE and the wind swell more from the east than it is now. Bureau says 1-1.5 metres, but the models are predicting the east component to be in the 6 second range early. So I’m thinking more marginal offerings in the morning and maybe the hope of something semi-do-able for the late.

Longer range outlook remains less than exciting, but not utterly forlorn. Basically, if you can find something to like about weak and junky knee to waist high wind swell, there should be something. At least the water’s beeyooteefull!

Happy New Year to you and yours!
