Big Monday morning at Dee Why

Hello Friends,

Huey didn’t get the memo obviously. It was supposed to be dropping, but instead from late yesterday both the period and size have ramped upward pretty sharply. At 0500, the MHL buoy showed swell was out of the SSE at 3 metres with a 13 second average period.

At 0740 when I checked for the first time, skies were heavily overcast, wind was out of the SW at 5-10 kts and tide was coming in from the 0610 low. Set wave faces looked to be 1.5x overhead, but then a 2x (?) bomb rolled in and pretty much smashed the big holiday Monday crowd. Although the wind wasn’t knocking it about, the swell looked raw and lumpy and bumpy.

None of the models picked this one, and their predictions haven’t been adjusted. The consensus is that we should be seeing around a metre of 10-11 sec east swell today and tomorrow. So, not much to do with this morning’s reality.

Definitely not a morning for beginners or anyone not quite at peak fitness and confidence.

Go well with your Monday!
