The smoke from the bush fires up and down NSW has dropped visibility to around 10 km along the beaches this morning. As the picture shows there’s no real reason to take anything smaller than a SUP down to the seashore at Dee Why. The MHL buoy is showing a little under a metre from the NE at 8 seconds and North Head was reporting 8-9 kts from the NNE at 0720.
The wind will get into the 15-25 kt range today before swinging SW late and tomorrow should see it light SW early with a rising south swell. From the look of the models, it’ll be straight south, so the waves will probably only be surfable at the magnets. How big? Well, I’m hoping for waist with the odd chest plus on bombs. But we’ll see…

A high pressure system lies over the Tasman Sea, promoting northerly winds along the New South Wales coast. A cold front looks set to bring a vigorous southerly change to southern and central parts of the coast on this afternoon and evening, and then weaken as it reaches northern parts of the coast on Wednesday. Following this, winds are expected to gradually ease as a weak high pressure ridge extends along the coast through the remainder of the week.
