"Stay happy and you'll be perfectly fine" - Jack Norris

Welcome to 2022, sorry about the waves

Happy New Year 2022!
Looking like nothing much in the way of a wave for the first day of the new year in Sydney. There’s a 1.3 m, 6 second NE wind swell wafting weakly into our shores. The NE wind didn’t back off at all overnight, so it’s been 10-20 kts from the get-go. As the day warms up to the expected 30C high, the wind’ll get a bit stronger and the tiny, messy conditions will be transformed into slightly bigger messy conditions.

Depending on what Seth the cyclone does in the coming days, we could see some energy here by mid-week. Indeed, from tomorrow the Bureau is calling for a rise in the NE wind bump heights and by Tuesday, as swell heights get into the 2-2.4 metre range, the period may stretch out a little to 11-12 seconds.

Wind looks like going around to the SSE by Tuesday, so our generally choppy surface conditions seem more likely than not to persist – although dawn patrollers might be rewarded with a touch of smoothness.

Have a top old Saturday, mask up with an N95, particularly in enclosed spaces. Oh, and assuming it’s possible, get your 3rd jab.

Weather Situation

A slow moving high pressure system over the Tasman Sea is extending a ridge towards the northeastern New South Wales. Meanwhile a category 2 tropical cyclone (Seth) off the northern Queensland Coast is heading south and expected to reach the northern Tasman Sea by Sunday before transitioning to an ex-tropical cyclone, then meanders off the far north coast of New South Wales while weakening through the first half of the new week. This may affect northern NSW coastal waters with large and powerful waves and hazardous surf conditions on Sunday through early new week.
