TG Friday Update

Friday update

Just spoke to Bruce, who’s sitting under a pandanus tree at Tee Tree with grandson Josh, while daughter Belinda is paddling out.  Quite a few out.  Wish I was there.  (Sigh No. 3).

Here are pics of Day 5 – with Belinda in yellow shirt (pic 9), Bruce in red (pic 15) – both came second in their heats in the Invitational.  I see some other familiar faces there too. J

Nasties update:

– A female surfer was attacked by a shark in waist-deep water on the South Coast yesterday.  The surfer, a mother, was paddling out at North Broulee Beach, south of Batemans Bay, about 7.45am when the shark bit into the nose of her surfboard.

Local surfers said the waves were small yesterday but the water at the beach was the warmest it had been this year and there had been a lot of fish activity recently.

– A large marine creature seen from the 16th tee at Mona Vale golf course last Wednesday afternoon chasing a school of fish, heading north.

– Friday’s Baitfish Boats on the Harbour Index:  15 (South Head to Bradley’s); 13 (Manly to Middle Head).

Just for info.

Have a good one!

 …..

Surf forecast issued Thursday 19 March 2009:  Seven day outlook for Sydney:

Well that was easy…  continuing small to flattish through next Thursday!

Friday – Thursday: 1 metre or less (mainly less) East, East North East.

Sigh… But when it’s like that you can still get some nice small waves at the right tide, right place.

And… Sigh No. 2… those sh.. s are still being a bloody nuisance!  That’s sh..arks.

No reason to be alarmed (just yet)… just be alert…

Last Thursday, Manly and North Steyne were closed because of a (?) shark chasing fish along the shore between the pipes.

On Monday evening after lifeguard hours, a shark was sighted at Queenscliff chasing fish.

Continuing TG’s Baitfish Boats on the Harbour Index: South Head to Bradley’s (stationary boats=catching fish; with earlier data for comparison purposes):

1. Week beginning Monday 2 March 2009 (week following Avalon shark attack)

Monday: 20; Tuesday: 24; Wednesday: 3; Thursday: 10; Friday: 24 (+ 5 Manly to Middle Head)

2. Week beginning Monday 9 March 2009

Monday: (didn’t see); Tuesday: 7; Wednesday: 17; Thursday: 9; Friday: 17 (+11 Manly to Middle Head).

3. Week beginning Monday 16 March 2009:

Monday: 7 (+ 2 North Harbour); Tuesday: 5 (+ 3 North Harbour); Wednesday: (didn’t see the harbour, but fish were off Manly-Queenscliff); Thursday: 16 (+ 8 North Harbour).

As I’ve said previously, in more “normal” times at that same time of day you’d notice maybe 2 or 3 boats out each day in that stretch of the harbour, trying their luck.  If nothing else, I now know all the good harbour fishing spots if you’ve got a boat!

The fish are still around… so why wouldn’t you stick around, if you were a shark wanting an easy feed?  It’s not rocket science.

Also, to repeat, the mere presence of a shark doesn’t mean attacks are imminent.  However sightings of sharks and fish in close do mean increased potential for unwanted shark/human interaction.

Just at the moment with the surf outlook not fantastic anyway, you might want to avoid getting in the water at the feeding times, when there are fish in the vicinity, days of poor visibility, choppy onshore conditions – when you can’t see them but they can sense your electric signals etc.  It’s a complete pain, I know.  They certainly aren’t making any friends among most humans I know…

The shark attack at Avalon Beach has now been confirmed as a 2.6 metre great White… same as at Bondi.

I had a fun little surf last weekend in the middle of the day, and it was good to have a chat with Charles Lindop out the back in the surf at North Av on Sunday.
