PICS: Monday waves at the Bower & Collaroy

A southerly arrived early and laid waste to most surf options on Monday, but the east swell still had some legs and there were waves to be had at the Bower and Collaroy. After weeks of dribble, Sydney surfers finally got a few fun waves thanks to a couple metres of east swell on a sunny Sunday. I surfed it myself and shot pictures at three different locations as well.

The biggest problem with shooting surf pictures is that most people are totally unaware that I’ve taken their picture.

Like me, most folks probably assume that surf photographer on the beach is taking shots of someone else and not them!

So, I thought I’d grab cameos from my latest surf photography session at south Curly on Sat 3 Sept 2011 and post them here in the off-chance people will see themselves or a friend – and then go check out the complete gallery by clicking here!

Friday the 13th of May turned out to be a lucky day for some as a couple metres of SSE swell hit the beaches of Sydney. After a surf at Dee Why point, your webmaster set up at mid-Curl Curl to do a bit of shooting. Sets were about twice as big as Dee Why (ie wave faces into the 2.5m+ range) and the small crew in the water were jagging a few fun ones. Click either of the pics on this page to go to the gallery…

It was a sunny day in Sydney and Manly’s North Steyne was producing a steady supply of chest to head high sets for a keen crowd of punters. I set up the camera out in front of the SLSC and started shooting at around 1130. Over the next hour I managed to get a couple hundred snaps of surfers having fun. As always my aim was to catch regular folks at the peak moment(s). Click either of the pics to jump to the gallery.

PICS from Don: Curl Curl Sunday midday

A sunny Sunday with a fading but still fun swell lighting up the south exposed beaches. Your webmaster was on the case at Curly around midday. Swell was still SE and although it was smaller than the day before, there were still some reasonably sizable sets to be had… Check out the piccies to see if I got one of you or a mate… ya never know – I shoot pretty much anyone who catches a wave and then do my best to make ‘em look good!

PICS from Don: Longy at the Lugga Saturday

I was only off the plane from the US a few hours when I grabbed the camera and headed out on a shooting expedition. Ended up near the lagoon entrance at Longy where I shot for awhile before the wind started chewing things up. PICS: Curl Curl, Sat 22 Jan 1000-1115

Got out and about with a camera this morning at Curly where the swell seemed to be up to the most good.  I got there around 1000 (looks like it was just after Doug from wozthatyou finished!) and worked my way from one end of the beach and back again over the next 1:15hrs. Came back with a couple hundred snaps for my gallery.

PICS: Late Weds afternoon chop shredding session at Northy

The light wasn’t the best, the surface conditions were pretty beat up, but there were some very crunchy low tide sections to be had at North Narrabeen late Wednesday afternoon. There were a heap of Pro Junior competitors out too, so despite the less than optimal conditions, I shot over a hundred pics.

PICS: Manly, Weds morning 5 Jan 2011

After weeks we finally get a little SE pulse with nice picture taking weather. I decided to check the situation at Manly and discovered there were some fun looking glassy peaks sliding in on the peaking tide. Heaps of folks were on it – which I love when I’m shooting – and while there was something of a wait between the sets, I still managed to fang off several hundred shots of regular folks catching nice waves.
