Meyerhoffer – The Evolution of Wave Riding

Posted by: on April 9th, 2009

The Meyerhoffer.

The Meyerhoffer.

The Meyerhoffer is possibly the most radical design innovation in Longboarding for a generation. With this ultra-modern take on the traditional Longboard world renowned industrial designer Thomas Meyerhoffer and Global Surf Industries bring his design excellence into the realm of the everyday surfer, increasing the ultimate experience and propelling surfing into the mainstream consciousness more than ever.

Always in search of ways to increase the experience Thomas Meyerhoffer designs products in the areas of sports, technology and furniture. His previous experimental surfboards have been included in New York’s Cooper Hewitt National Design Museum and the Pasadena Museum of California Art, while Outside Magazine has tipped the Meyerhoffer Longboard  in 2009 as ‘a surfing product that will blow your mind.’

In action.

In action.

Each section of the board is optimized for maximum performance, the design evolving into an incredibly complex shape with three different bottom contours that transition smoothly into each other with its own purified purpose in an organic and seamlessly effective shape. Just like nature itself. The evolution of the Meyerhoffer has been a process of taking away more than adding to traditional forms, enabling Thomas a greater opportunity to shape the board.

“As a designer I believe in the proportions of nature. If you change a shape in one direction the flow on effect undoubtedly changes it in the other,” said Thomas.

From the wide tail through a minimal waist and into a more classic nose, the design brings short board elements into a longer board to maximize speed and turning, provides paddling ease and high performance nose riding. Every element of the board provides the ability for smooth transition from front to back.

“I want to further explore that indefinable feeling of surfing and I see this same sentiment within Global Surf Industries,” he added.

And in their quest to push the boundaries of surfboard design Australian company Global Surf Industries has teamed with Thomas for the next chapter in this evolution.  The Meyerhoffer once more takes us back to the Longboard and beyond the current shape while still encompassing core shortboard philosophies in its design.

“It has always been a goal of mine to help create definite design differentiation in the retail surf industry,” said GSI Managing Director Mark Kelly.

“As a whole, surfboards are very similar and I believe today it is shapes over construction that we need to develop further.”

Global Surf Industries is the largest surfboard distributer in the world, distributing to over 50 countries. Mark believes if you were to take 20 random boards from the rack at your local surf shop and remove all brand definable markings, most of us would be at a loss trying to differentiate between each. Unless however, included in that collection are the latest Meyerhoffer Longboards.

“We are a company for the recreational surfer and I cannot wait to give every surfer out there the opportunity to ride this truly innovative piece of modern design,” concluded Mark.  The Meyerhoffer model was release in limited numbers in the USA this month. It will be available around the world over the next few months.

The Meyerhoffer is being marketed under Global Surf Industries – Modern Longboards brand. It was officially launched and surfed at this year’s Global Surf Industries Noosa Festival of Surfing in Australia. The Festival ran from March 15 – 22 and encompassed the GSI One Design Invitational – all contestants surfed the 9’2 Meyerhoffer model. Reports from all surfers who rode the board was that is outperformed their expectations and the comment “There’s some special about this board” were repeated over and over.

ANOTHER WORLD PREMIERE FOR NOOSA FESTIVAL

Posted by: on February 20th, 2009

The world premiere of the feature-length “Searching for Michael Peterson” will be a highlight of the Global Surf Industries Noosa Festival of Surfing, with the sport’s luminaries from around the world expected to attend.

The premiere, at Noosa Cinemas on Monday, March 16 will be hosted by former world pro surfing champion Peter Townend, and will also feature a live music set from “Morning of the Earth” musicians Peter Howe and Tim Gaze, plus an exclusive encore screening of the American Wide World of Sports special, “Puerto Rico World Titles 1968”, unseen for almost 40 years.

Searching for Michael Peterson, directed by Jolyon Hoff, is a docudrama telling the moving story of one of Australia’s greatest surfers whose career was cut short by mental illness. For five glorious years “MP” led the Coolangatta Kids and won virtually every event he contested, including three Bells Beach Pros back to back. His brilliant, aggressive surfing provided the centrepiece for Albert Falzon’s Morning of the Earth in 1972, and MP never looked back. His final tour victory, at the inaugural Stubbies Pro at Burleigh Heads in 1977, is regarded as the high point of the early professional era. Sadly, a year later triumph turned to tragedy and Michael’s demons claimed him.

Thirty years on, MP is still vitally interested in the sport and culture of surfing and is a fixture at most Queensland events, enjoying the action with his mother, Joan. He is rightly regarded as an iconic figure in Australian surfing, and Hoff’s film, while it pulls no punches, is an intensely moving tribute to the man.

Puerto Rico ’68 was unearthed by producer Larry Lindberg just prior to a 40th anniversary reunion of the event in California last year. This will be the first public showing of a remarkable document of an extraordinary time in surfing, as the shortboard replaced the longboard.

This rare performance together by Peter Howe and Tim Gaze celebrates the release of Peter’s new album, “Postcards from the Coast”, a musical celebration of a year spent sailing along the Queensland coast. Howe’s haunting “I’m Alive (Delightful Rain)” was one of the central themes of Morning of the Earth, and later gave its name to the ABC surf music television special. Gaze, formerly of Tamam Shud, is one of Australia’s greatest guitar virtuosos, equally at home with surf music or the blues.

A limited number of tickets for this special night will be available at $30. Tickets on-sale from Mon 23 Feb 09. For information visit www.noosafestivalofsurfing.com

GSI Release 7S Super Fish Epoxy Range :: video :: pics

Posted by: on December 5th, 2008

7S Super Fish Epoxy

7S Super Fish Epoxy

Continual feedback from retailers and consumers around the world led Global Surf Industries to develop an Epoxy version of the very successful 7S Super Fish.

This board has just been released to the marketplace in the USA, Australia and New Zealand. The Sandwich Epoxy construction used by GSI in making the 7S Super Fish sees a machined EPS core wrapped in fiberglass and a thin wood veneer embedded into the deck, this allows the board to be lightweight and have a natural flex pattern. The wrapped core is then laminated with Epoxy resin and sandwiched together with a top and bottom skin to give the board great durability.

Standard sizes from 5’9” – 8’0” cover just about every surfer on the planet. Sold in over 50 countries currently, the 7S Super Fish is one of the most popular surfboards on the planet due to its wave catching ability and performance in a wide variety of conditions.

It features a Step deck design to give the board maximum volume so it paddles fast. The performance rails allow the board to be ridden hard and fast. For more information go to: www.surfindustries.com/7S

Aloha Surfboards Goes Global

Posted by: on October 16th, 2008

Aloha Surf International is pleased to announce it has entered into a licence agreement with Global Surf Industries to manufacture and distribute a specialised range of Aloha surfboards worldwide.

The arrangement will provide distribution of the iconic Australian surfboard brand through the Global Surf Industries (GSI) core surf dealership network into over 50 countries.

Initially, GSI will offer four models from the Aloha range aimed primarily at the high performance end of the market. The new Aloha GSI models; AFI Pro, AF2 Turbo, the Stryker and the Quickshift have been designed to offer surfers a comprehensive range of performance surfboard options. Aloha Brand Ambassador, Surfboard Manager and former WCT surfer, Richie Lovett, will spearhead the Aloha GSI surfboard program.

Richie spoke enthusiastically about the opportunity. “We wanted to make sure the new models offered something for pros and elite level surfers right through to the weekend surfer. The range itself features two high performance short board variations, an all-round short board and a performance fish model. Although each model is designed primarily for performance surfing we have structured the sizes to offer a valid option for the intermediate surfer as well. A great deal of time and energy has gone into designing these boards and translating feedback from our team riders has been a key part of the formula to producing this specialised Aloha GSI range”.

GSI has built an enviable reputation for surfboard manufacturing excellence and have created a superb global sales and distribution network that will now include the famed Aloha brand which will sit alongside the existing brands of Webber, McTavish, Walden, Modern, South Point, 7S, NSP and Blue.

GSI President and Managing Director, Mark Kelly believes, “The addition of Aloha will add an exciting new dimension to our current product range and will offer our dealers a complete solution for their customers. Aloha has maintained a strong position for quality and performance surfing since its inception and the pedigree of the brand linked to former world champion surfers and the current Aloha team riders will allow us to showcase the brand globally like never before.”

Richie adds; “We are excited about this deal as it means we will be working closely with the current team riders including, Luke Munro, Mark Matthews, Zahn Foxton, Matt Bemrose and Jarrah Tutton to continually develop, test and evolve our designs to meet the needs of surfers everywhere. Having access to these ‘test pilots’ is invaluable because it ensures the right product goes to market.”

The Aloha GSI range will be available in Australian stores this summer. Northern Hemisphere release will be March 2009.

Background:

The Aloha brand has a history that stretches over 30 years with former World Champions and many of the world’s top professional surfers having enjoyed success riding Aloha surfboards. From its inception back in 1978 Aloha steadily rose to become one of the most popular and recognizable surfboard brands around the world. Aloha currently houses a stable of world-class shapers and maintains a high profile team of quality surfers.
