Don’s (surf!) Party

You’re invited to join crowdfunding pledgers at Deck Bar, Dee Why on Wednesday evening, October 23 2013!

Whether we make the target or not, I’m marking the end of the crowdfunding campaign with a party.

You’ll need an invite – and the only way to get one is to first make a pledge here.

Steve Buckles and the good folks at Deck Bar have given us an excellent deal on the food and drink. For a cover of only $27.50 a person, they’ll give you two drinks and a steady supply of gourmet pizza. Talk about a cheap night out!

Bonython frame grabI’m still working on the evening’s program, but as of this writing I’ve got ABC 702 weekend show presenter and all around bon vivant Simon Marnie on deck for MC duties and I’ve organised musician Paul Berry to play a few cruisy tunes. I’m going to be editing together a short highlights reel from my rarely seen 1977 footage of Michael Peterson surfing at Kirra, Winki Pop (Bells) and in the semi-final with Rabbit from the Stubbies event he won that year. I’ll include a few sequences of Peter Crawford at Dee Why point and Terry Fitzgerald doing the sultan of speed thing at perfect North Narrabeen. A big highlight for me will be seeing what surf movie maker Tim Bonython brings along to share. Maybe it’ll be some of the amazing stuff he’s shot in the last year for his upcoming Australian Surf Movie Festival too. And I’ve got a few more ideas to work on…

As if that weren’t enough, I figured it might be a plan to have a few silent board auctions as well. Two fine craftsmen are each offering a custom shaped board for the silent auctions. From the Northern Beaches, we’ll have the highly regarded and all around genuinely nice chap, Mike Psillakis and, making the arduous drive north along the deadly Hume with some handcrafted composite goodness, Vicco’s (and the RealSurf forums’) very own Joshua Dowling. If you’re looking to get an inexpensive learner board for the grommet in your life, there’ll also be a silent auction for one such courtesy Manly reporter Mark Rennie of Surfboards Direct.

Look forward to seeing you there!

Don
