A few little bumps

Posted on April 24th, 2011 in Manly.

SE swell has eased back to small 1-2ft at Manly.  Really not doing a lot early.  Wind is a nice offshore at the moment so you have plenty of time to hunt around for somewhere picking up a bit more or the right bank.  The wind is forecast to swing to the SE later so don’t sleep in too long.

Have fun

Where did those perfect conditions go

Posted on April 23rd, 2011 in Manly.

Grey, raining, cold air (warm water) and 2ft short period waves.  Despite this there are a good number of keen people out attacking it.  Surface is at least nice and clean and wind is offshore.  Wind is supposed to swing to the SE and swell pick up a little so I guess sooner rather than later. Manly should remain the cleanest but smaller option to the last minute.  Will be bigger elsewhere.

Boost in size, drop in power means grey windswell in the shoulder-high range. Lots of bumps, but few of them providing satisfying rides

The Goat’s Surf Forecast

Posted on April 22nd, 2011 in Goat's Forecast.

Surf forecast issued Friday 22 April 2011:

Hey you think it’s small now… wait till tomorrow …  Mother Nature makes her own rules and doesn’t always do what you think she should.

While at the start of the week it looked like tomorrow would be coming up, put that on hold as there’s a lot of SW in the wind – which means the swell that’s starting to come up the coast – the Eden buoy has risen today  – is heading out into the Tasman.  But then wait a bit longer and you’ll have more than you want starting Tuesday.

Saturday: 1 metre or less South East

Sunday: ditto.

Monday: same for the daylight hours – coming up in the dark..

Tuesday: about 2 metres South East

Wednesday: 3-4 metres East

Thursday: 4+ metres East

Friday: similar swinging more thru the North East

Be careful out there

Knee-high, at best

Posted on April 22nd, 2011 in Manly.

POST SURF UPDATE: 9am – Sorry but Manly just didn’t deliver.  Lots of floating and not much surfing.  Take something long with lots of foam or stay at home and have a hot cross bun.

Mirror image of yesterday almost, with tiny lines, hint of sth angle and such inviting conditions that just make you want to surf something….anything.  Hopefully like every other day this week the incoming tide will create a window of action just enough to satisfy the itch. Its glassy with a hint of wind on the horizon so early is best (always)

Take something fat, find a sth magnet bank and enjoy floating around rather than sitting in Easter traffic.  If you are on a surf mission I hope you score this weekend.  Happy Easter

Postcard from Cali (+ Sydney surf thoughts)

Posted on April 22nd, 2011 in At large, California, Santa Barbara.

Hello Friends,

One of the advantages of being in California is that our daylight hours start 7 hours before Sydney at this time of year. So yours truly can get an extremely leisurely start on looking at forecast stuff whilst still being extra early with the report (it’s 0400 as I start writing). :-)

I’d say Sydney surfers are going to be somewhat underwhelmed by this morning’s offerings. Swell, such as it isn’t, is coming from the SSE. It’s about 9 seconds apart which would be okay if it had a little size. But it doesn’t. Average height showing on the MHL Sydney buoy is around the half metre mark. As a consequence I very much doubt if anyone will be catching a wave today.

If you’re near a wireless tomorrow morning, tune in to ABC 702 at a little before 0730 because the mighty Goat himself will be examining the entrails and divining the surf future therefrom. It’s unlikely that I’ll be able to listen in because I’ll be in the high desert country of SE California and our Granite Mountains cabin doesn’t have mains power, let alone a net connection.

Here’s a webcam shot from this morning of a surf spot in Ventura called C-Street. It’s one of those spots that picks up anything going, but because of its excellent exposure, it also cops any wind. It’s a long right reef/point set up and it’ll hold waves with faces into the 4 metre range (or bigger).  But today it’s struggling to get above waist high. Water temp is around the 14 mark.

Suffering Succotash - Surf forecast update for those wanting an early indication of upcoming surf for the Easter/Anzac break…

Suffice to say…. there’s sufficient info to suggest that the early part of the break will be less than inspiring …  ssss  ffffff  !!!  Hisssy ffit …

Oh well… enough alliteration… (big word, hope I spelled it right:)

Tuesday: about 1-2 metres East South East.

Wednesday: about 1 metre East.

Thursday: about 1 metre East South East.

Good Friday: less than 1 metre East South East.

Easter Saturday: up from the South, say about 2 metres at places that get dead South swell, but with ordinary wind and weather.

Easter Sunday: in the 1-2 metre range South.

Easter Monday/Anzac Day: about 1 metre East.

Have a peaceful Easter and Anzac Day, remember the Diggers, and reflect on the things that matter to you, besides surf.

Historical fact>>> cause we like to keep you informed and edjucated (and I just happened to be reading about it :)

On the morning of 19 April 1770 (that’ll be 241…someone check my maths… years ago next Tuesday) Lt Zachery Hicks on Cook’s ship Endeavour became the first recorded European to spot the East Coast of Australia.. at…Point Hicks… (though surprisingly it wasn’t called that then)…  Where’s that??  Check it out on a map – I’m not going to spoon feed you…  But I will say that TG has had a swim in the ocean close by there, and the water is quite cool.

Contrary to popular misconception, Cook expected to bump into the East Coast around that spot because he guessed that’s where it should be, based on Tasman’s earlier maps from the 1600s of the bottom bit and Tasmania (which surprisingly also wasn’t called that then)…  The fact that Cook pretty much expected it to be there doesn’t reduce the signficance of the find and his navigational skills.

The weather in 1770 was similar to this week - wet weather, gales, followed by moderate winds…

Cookie and the boys then proceeded to cruise up the uncharted coast, checking out all the surf spots… but that’s another story…
