Midday update: bigger than expected

Chunky set wave

Wind blown shutdowns

Bomb set

Hello Friends,

Love it when that happens. It looked minor and weak when I filed my first report today, but when I got down to the beach for some paddling practice, I discovered that the energy levels were starting to go up – a fact confirmed by my mate Ken who was just getting out when I arrived.

The beachy at Dee Why is pretty lined up at the moment. Lots and lots of shutdowns with the very occasional makeable one. Seeing a wave like thing over at the point, I decided to head there with mate Barry. Although it crowded up not long after we got in the water, we both managed to score a couple in the chest to head high range (on wave faces). Not all time, but so much better than I’d expected. I’m giving it 6/10 for summer.

One factor that changed was the average period which at the time we paddled out had jumped to nearly 15 seconds. Swell direction was SSE and height at sea was a touch under the 2 metre mark according to the 0900 buoy data.

Water was perfect temp too, so really, smiles all around!

Not sure about tomorrow’s prospects. Be interesting to see what the Bureau’s 4pm forecast looks like. The swell seems to be fading down at Eden, so it could well be back to more marginal – but not flat conditions. Tide’s high for the early though and then it’ll be NE…

We shall see! So, once again, Happy New Year everyone!
