A few snaps from late morning

Hi All

When everyone else was heading to the beach, I was driving to Mt Colo, 100 kms to the west (family thing). But it looks like there should be waves all day, so I may yet add my name to the cast of thousands enjoying Sydney’s beaches today. Places with any size, eg Curly and Dee Why were very well attended.

I agree with earlier reports that there is a fair amount of fatness to the swell, but if you could find something bowling, well, a bowl’s a bowl, id’niit? Fun to be had for sure.

I started my look around with a scan of the Collaroy-Narra stretch. Not much happening at Collaroy but from around about the south Narra surf club on north there were lots of little peaks keeping lots of folks entertained.

Not as big as more exposed beaches, but offering a few fun ones, particularly to fishy shapes.

Around the corner at Longy, there was a small crew out the back on the bombies. Saw exactly one wave come through and it wasn’t much. More action inside and up the beach from about the lugga to Dee Why.

Traffic in Dee Why mirrored the crowd levels in the water. Some sets into the head high range, but a fair number of multi-person takeoffs, and the super peak seems to be the former super peak.

Over the hill at Curly land there were many more people having a cut at half a dozen different peaks. The north end was just not coming together that much, so the real action and crowd density was from about the middle of the beach right into the south corner. A few head high plus sets on offer. Pretty sectiony – which kind of helps break up the crowd.

Tomorrow the weather won’t be so nice, but the swell should begin to ramp back up as it heads toward bigness for Monday (though not as huge as it looked it might be last week). Models are agreeing with the Bureau (or vice versa) and currently saying we could see S to SSE swell at 3-4 metres at 14 sec apart. That’s big and juicy.

Here’s the Bureau’s take:

Sydney Coastal Waters, Broken Bay to Port Hacking and 60nm seawards:
Saturday until midnight: Wind: S/SW 15/20 knots, increasing to 20/25 knots during the evening. Sea: 1.5 to 2 metres, rising to 2 to 2.5 metres in the evening.Swell: S 2 to 2.5 metres.
Sunday: Wind: SW/SE 15/25 knots, easing to 10/20 knots later.Sea: 1.5 to 2.5 metres, abating to 1 to 2 metres later. Swell: S 2 to 3 metres, increasing overnight.
Monday: Wind: SW/SE 5/15 knots. S/SE swell 3 to 4 metres
